I have a system 2000 boiler with baseboard water heat. I was wondering about how much water this system uses if at all. I see their is a water fill valve. Was wondering if it is safe to shut off the water main to the house and still run the system for a few weeks in winter while on vacation and while we are away?
The concern would be that we loose electricity and the heating goes off and the pipes burst and at least having the water off would make it not as bad.

Theoretically, it should not need water
Safer method is to monitor the power. With technology today, you can easily access the house with alarms, cameras, etc. If you find the power out, have a neighbor or relative take care of things.
OTOH, if the feed pipe freezes it will make no difference open or closed.
Thanks Ed, I really appreciate it you taking the time to write. I have a temp alarm and a water alarm and some wifi cameras. We're pretty remote so might not be able to have anyone come over so that is why I was thinking I'd shut off the water proactively. I am guessing if there was a prolonged cold spell and the pipes burst (cracked) at least we wouldn't have water pouring into the house vs not.
Some hydronic systems use antifreeze in the circulation loops though I wouldn't do that if the boiler was connected to the home's potable water system.
