I read that the thicker AC cord is known as SPT2. Do they still sell SPT1 wire? Do any lamps or appliances sold these days still use it.
I have found the insulation on SPT1 to be fine. Were there problems? A lot of them?

You can buy any wire you like if you don't tell anyone what you're using it for.
Only if in direct sunlight a lot. The thicker cord lasts longer in UV light.
