Trump indeed had his awakening, but that didn't stop him from continuing to say that his health care plan was "two weeks away, coming real soon, very soon, I'll be signing an executive order bill".
Early on, Trump correctly figured out that his supporters were idiots. He could tell them anything and they'd believe it. He could sell them anything and they'd buy it.

That's pretty much it. He even pretty much said that when he said that he could shoot someone on Fifth Ave and they would still love him. That to me implies you're stupid and/or immoral. He's done one horrible, despicable thing after another and they still love him.
