Hm.. Had not heard about the secretary's comments at all. Guess I don't follow the politics of outrage close enough.

Sometimes tearing down roadways can be good for everyone:

It is certainly true that freeways were preferentially routed through less advantaged neighborhoods when designed and built in the

1950s.

They somewhat have a point. The only land they can afford to "take" will be in the poor part of town. Railroads are the worst. Nobody wants a train running near their house and if they have the political clout they won't have to. We had several gated communities actually build around the only rail line here. (Ft Myers to North Naples) Then they forced the closure of the rail line. All of that heavy freight is now on the road.

They did have one passenger train, a dinner run with a murder mystery show on board. That went the other way, north of town. (My daughter actually got to run that train. the conductor used to work for us) I suggested years ago that this could easily be that commuter train everyone says we need. It could have picked up the maids and landscapers near their home and drop them off right in the gated communities where they work. ;-)

Funny how you say we are wrong, then show us we were right like that was what you meant the whole time..

Can you elaborate? Highways themselves cannot be racist. The people who chose the route were the racists.

You said, and I quote:

Your folks are already calling roads racist.

Nothing in the article I posted calls roads racist.

_You_ are the one that called roads racist so you can conveniently avoid addressing the actual issues.

Did you look at any of the articles ?

You build highways on the cheapest land available -- if that happens to be a black neighborhood because black people have been discriminated against and are poorer than white people and live in cheaper houses on cheaper land it's NOT the fault of the people building the highways. They're parsimonious with OUR money (which is what *I* certainly want), not racist.

That is a poor plan. The cheapest land possible may be the most expensive. The best way is an efficient route taking many factors into consideration.

Does it make sense to choose route A over route B to save $5million in land acquisition? Not if it is a poor layout and cars will spend an extra $50 million for extra gas over the life of the highway.

In most cases the most direct route might be through those neighborhoods simply because there wasn't much else done there. I am not sure about everywhere but in a lot of big cities, those roads end up making the land more attractive to developers who will buy out those folks living there and gentrify the area. It happened in DC and Baltimore for sure. Things like the Metro even made it worse for those people living in "affordable" neighborhoods. It wasn't long before Yuppies were buying those row houses for used car money and making million dollar town houses out of them. I knew a guy in DC who did that. He said it was like being a pioneer for a while but once he was joined by his peers things got nice and he made a bundle on that house when he retired and moved south.

Bottled up in a democrat congress, the same way Biden will be shut out next year. The democrats might not be able to get a post office renamed in the 118th congress.
