I have to remove some silly putty type poster adhesive which dried on a wall. Is WD40 safe to use on latex paint? If not, what could I use?

I have to remove some silly putty type poster adhesive which dried on a wall. Is WD40 safe to use on latex paint? If not, what could I use?
I use metho. I don't know if it's safe on all paints, but I've never had any trouble.
