Poly or varnish?

What is a quick test to tell if a finish is varnish or poly? Thank you Tinker

Since poly is varnish, that would be a tough test.

What is the point of the interest .......... Whats the need .....for someone that knows nada , refinishining both are equal

If it really matters, the usual oil based varnishes have a much lower softening point than polurethanes, so a deft test with a hair dryer or similar heat source will give you a clue. HTH

I don't know of any similar chemical test for poly/resin varnish but they are considerably different visually, the poly having the well known "plasticy" look. Additionally, they abrade differently...scraping resin varnish will get you powdery shavings.

If you rub the coating briskly with your hand, the varnish sometimes has a very different distictictive odor.
