Mine is all wood, and at least 40 years old. Only the knobs are plastic.

Plastic knobs? Why on earth would they do that. Mine with wood knobs lasted at least 50 years.
How do you make a wooden knob? How do you think the process compares to injection molding generic plastic knobs?
Why does any company do something? To make their product more profitable to them, of course.
