Perhaps he reason for this exception is cheap charging circuitry that's equally unsuitable for both.

That's true of plug-in chargers but I doubt you'd ever come remotely close to overcharging an AA cell with the tiny solar panels that normally come with such lights. Not unless the sun went supernova and then I suspect a charger would be the least of your problems. (-:
Any power run over a distance, AC or DC, high or low voltage has a power loss. And LEDs reduce the power required by an order of magnitude right off the bat, which is a huge help.
Let say you have a 40W incandescent at 120V. That's a load of .33 amps. A 40W equivalent led is about 6w, requiring .5 amps. So, it would require about 50% more current, but if you had 20 of them, it's still only 10 amps, which doesn't require anything unusual or expensive in the way of wiring to support. If you had 20 40W incandescents, it would be 6.6 amps.

No, my numbers are correct. The 40W equivalent LED is operating at 12 volts.
6 watts at 12V is .5 amps. The point is that the current required at 12V to run the LEDS is in the same ballpark as the current required to run 40W 120V bulbs and no special, costly wiring is required for the 12V lights.Have something to add? Share your thoughts — no account required.
