I just went to my local Wal-Mart today. They were advertising the same thing. Walgreens is often open of holidays, but I consider Christmas Day to NOT be a day for shopping.

Agreed. We have one local McDonald's, Wendy's, etc. They all shut down. I never paid attention to the Walmart's Christmas activities.

I read a couple weeks ago or even before Thanksgving that many big box stores would no longer be staying open so many hours. For one thing, people don't buy any more. They just spread it out or wait until the last minute. And people want their holidays. One of the camping stores closed for 4 days iirc on Thanksgiving so everyone could go hiking.

My aunt died shortly before Xmas a few years ago. I drove to Indianapolis and after I got there I realized that the day after the funeral was a good time to go to Alexandria Indiana, where one pair of my grandparents first lived in the US, in 1907, and Anderson, 10 miles south, where they lived next. I was amazed that Walgreens was open on Xmas, buit very happy about it because I bought a camera there. Since I knew I'd never be there again.

I had recently gotten their first address from my grandmother's Ellis Island records,on which she said where exactly she was going, where her husband lived. My GF had come about 9 months earlier, maybe a year counting the time he spent in England, unsuccessfully looking to start a career that his education might qualify him for. He wasn't very successful looking for a careeer in NYC or Indiana either, but by that time he knew he was out of options, so he worked as a laborer. He didn't want his wife to come until he had a job. but even that job was enough. So I went to that address.

It was five blocks from the main street, still a cheap street (Where else would new immigrants live) and 6 blocks was across the railroad tracks and just about out of town, even 100 years later. One block can make a lot of difference. The rest of the block seemed unchanged, even the scrap yard that was across the street and the whole length of the block. Now there a fairly nice high fence, but I wonder what there was
