Why do people mishear 2 and 3 in speech, especially on the phone? The consonant and the vowel are both different.

I do talk proper. But I do live in Scotland where they maybe don't hear proper. Or expect everyone to talk wrong.
Learn to use a killfile.
Could you supply a list of people that mishear 2 and 3? Contact info also.
I want to research this matter for you, but since I don't know of a single person that has ever misheard those words, my research resources are limited.

I'm not sure they really do. What makes you so sure? There are no phonetics for numbers. Brian
Listen to the pilots, they say three as tree deliberately, I'd imagine it could have something to do with noisy environments perhaps?

Because I've been misheard many times on a bad line. I have no accent.
Not sure why a th sound could make it more like two. Are you sure it's not Irish pilots you're thinking of? They have a speech impediment, or more likely a brain impediment.
Easier to understand drunks as they talk slower.
T and TH are not the same sounds. OO and EE are not the same sound. So nothing at all in common.
I didn't note them down. Basically 50% of the people I'm talking to on a low quality line.
