OT: Crews on brand new cruise ships are apparently incompetent too

Looks like the Viking Cruise ship that was disabled in high seas, had to have 300 rescued in high winds by helipcopter and put 29 in the hospital had a crew as incompetent as the crews on the Boeing planes. Right away I said, how can a two year old cruise ship lose both engines? Turns out they had low oil, though it was above the minimum acceptable level. But in the high seas it was sloshing around, so the low oil sensor halted the engines. OK, and then? I see solutions other than letting the ship just sit there, disabled, at the mercy of the seas:
1 - Checking the oil, seeing there was enough, disable or work around the oil sensor and restart the engines. With the oil sloshing around it's likely the engines would still be OK. Just run one.
2 - Put oil in? Don't they have some extra oil? You;d think there would be enough extra oil on board to at least get one engine going
3 - Take the oil out of one engine and put it into the other, so that one engine will run.
4 - Have the helicopter deliver the oil?
Also, it's still unknown why they set out into bad weather. Looks like a lot of incompetence again, to me. More and more crews only know how to push a button and don't actually understand the systems, the mechanics and how to solve emergencies. This one, they had a day or more, you'd think some mechanics back at the company or engine manufacturer could have come up with a solution.

It's cheaper to evacuate a ship occasionally than it is to staff each ship with a competent maintenance crew.
Who knows, maybe Viking outsources maintenance for its entire fleet?

If a highly regulated business like airlines has so many incompetent operators, why would you think a business as loosely regulated as shipping would be any better? Most of maritime law was written when ships had sails.

That remains to be seen given that we don't yet know how much that evacuation has cost them in terms of the number that decide to cruise with a more competent operation now.

That's not true at all with the number of lifeboats etc they have to have.

The regulations are minimal at best and if your ship is flagged in a 3d world port it is even worse.

'The Mutiny of the Elsinore' is a Jack London novel that is seldom read. It's a little politically incorrect for today's tastes. The left would love to claim London's socialism but there is some baggage that goes along with it. 'The Iron Heel' is another good read that was prescient.

I don't know about the Viking ships but I don't think ships flying a Liberian or Mauritanian flag can even spell law. My brother in law went to a maritime college and towards the end of his like had captains papers although he never sailed higher than 2nd mate. Like everything else US shipping was outsourced. The MM&P union limited the members to 6 months of work a year to spread it around. The b.i.l. was killed by lightning while doing an Erie Canal re-enactment during his forced vacation.
When I was a kid I was interested in the merchant marine too, but as an engineering officer rather than deck. Fortunately I went in another direction. Even if you get work with a container ship you don't see much of the world except container yards. Take them off, load new ones, and back out to sea.

Why not just plug an old PC into your TV? All of my TVs have a PC hooked to them except the "Smart" one my wife bought and compared to a PC, it ain't all that smart. Couple that with a 2.4gz mouse and you sit in your laZboy and run it.

You don’t have much choice with cruise ships, the pax get pretty pissed off if there is no cruise for them.

Yeah, we need you running all cruise ships too. You're gunna be a busy boy.

That’s bullshit, as always from you.

And it remains to be seen why they couldn’t. You don’t know if those particular engines have ever been used before and whether someone fucked up the design and they don’t work well in rough weather oil sloshing wise etc.

I aspire to one of those Viking style send offs but I doubt that's going to happen. Those cruises are too close to a senior citizen bus trip for my taste.

We've traveled to Europe, mostly Italy. We'd rent a house for a week here, then a week there. We'd shop and eat where the locals go.
We were asked to go on a cruise that went to Italy and ended up in France. In 10 days you spent about 35 hours on shore and had to be back to the boat by 5 to move on. So while visiting one of the places with the finest food in the work you were on the cruise ship eating the equivalent of Applebees. Made no sense to me.
