Operates for as little as a penny-a-mile for gas

You might not get there cheaply, but you'd get there fast with the 1951 Hudson Hornet.
You'd better find some of the 16.9 cents per gallon gas to go with it. What you really need is a Messerschmitt:
Lowest I remember, early 60s, was 17.9 at a Merit station. The Exxon across the street was always about 3 cents higher. Oh, they also had re-refined oil cheap too.
History Channel had a series Cars That Changed History. They showed some similar "bubble" cars
I like the 1948 about halfway down the page
We would drive well out of our way to save 2 cents per gallon. It was a bit different then that bothering to detour to CostCo to save 5 cents a gallon on $4.49 gas.
I don't know if it's still around but Wolf's Head oil was a reputable brand, but you could also find Fox Head oil cheap, Not quite the same. It was sort of like Harbor Freight hoping you confuse Milwaukee with Chicago.
Then there was the mystery oil in the one quart glass bottles. After the attendant poured a quart can of oil into your car they would carefully put the can in a homemade rack to let it drain out completely. The dregs were then poured into the glass bottles. It probably was better than recycled.
I was fascinated by the Messerschmitts. A friend who grew up in Germany wasn't as impressed. They were very slow and tended to get run over. It was better than the Isetta though.
My 2010 Prius continues to get 51-55 MPG and I've never had to repair anything. Yes, I've had routine maintenance replacements required, including new tire pressure sensors (although the original set lasted more than 12 years). But that's all. Considering how much less my auto insurance is on a 16 year old vehicle with no curb appeal compared to insuring a newer more up-to-date appearing vehicles, I have no plan to replace it. Of course, I only have a little more than 60K miles on it. It still rides quietly without rattles or squeaks and still accelerates smoothly even when I have to accelerate rapidly to merge with high speed traffic.
