That is not a "nail" thing. The best chance of not screwing up the brick any more than necessary, use TapCons with the right bit. Don't be stingy with the screws. Brick is softer than concrete so go in 1.5' or so.

1.5' seems to be a bit much. Methinks 1.5" would be more better. [g]

It's actually 1.5 varas :-)
BTW, In case you don't know, a vara (or is it vera?) is about as long as a meter.
