If you're asked to determine the height of something, you can be assured it will be there. And no lifts were mentioned.
But, now he runs back to the bow. There's more friction with the stern against the water than the bow against the water, so the boat doesn't move back as much. Net effect, he's back at the bow and the boat is further forwards.
