Modifying rafters in bonus room

Hi all,

I have a bonus room built into the rafter space over a 2 car garage. The gable end faces the side of the house where the garage entrance is.

There is also a gable coming off one side of this roof - this smaller gable faces the front of the house.

The main gable roof was framed with 2x8 rafters, then the front gable roof was framed on top of this (room has 4 ft. knee walls, 1 window at the gable end).

The problem is that I'm losing the square footage under this second gable since the framer didn't header out this section in the main gable.

Any suggestions on how this would normally be framed/headered out? I do plan to run it by a structural engineer first to see what options are available - I'm just curious as to how you might do this.

Thanks, Budman

Do a search for "dormer framing"

This roof is much bigger than a single window dormer, and it's a retrofit. I guess you're still recommending to frame it up like a regular dormer?
