Lightest ladder -- regular and roof?

That's a pretty apt description; you might find it easier to use an conventional extension ladder, you can raise the upper section once the ladder is against the structure.

Still, it's not easy for *anyone* if it's a sufficiently awkward location, or a high enough wind.

Many people - especially if they work construction - can be pretty casual about ladders, but they are killers.

A Home Inspector working in the next town over was killed a few years back by a fall of around 8'. Probably, as he drove up to the single story house, he was thinking 'Piece of Cake'. When I was a child one of my neighbors was electrocuted when his ladder touched a power line. This spring, two workers well killed in a fall a half-mile from my house.

I was "lucky" enough to have gone off a 2nd story roof as a young man without serious injury (patch of loose granules on a seemingly not very challenging roof - I went down through tree branches, breaking the fall), since then I've taken ladders and heights *very* seriously.

So my advice to ANYONE if they don't feel comfortable raising or using a ladder in a given situation is DON'T DO IT.

Find someone to assist you, or as much as you would like to do the work yourself, hire it out - whatever you are trying to do, it will be harder to do if you are dead.

Wow. I just found out that this 3 ft step ladder I got from my mom when she died is a Magnesium Workmaster ladder from Sears. 1950 ventage. I always assumed it was aluminum because of its weight, but it most certainly is stronger than your typical aluminum ladder and when I used a wire brush to clean off all the old paint and grime it turned an odd dark color I have never seen with aluminum. Never knew until today it was Magnesium but that makes so much sense as to why this thing has held up so well for 80 years!

And despite what it said, I didn't consider the fiberglass ladder to be light. I didn't have a scale with me, but still.

I have a bunch of ladders and the aluminum ones are generally lighter than fiberglass. (Type 2, 6 ft stepladders)

At work we had a few aluminum ladders, but many fiberglass ones. Everything from 6 foot step ladders to some very long extension ladders. They all had to be rated for something like 300 or 35o pound weight if I recall. Much more than the 250 pound home ladder. They all had to be non conductive because they were often used around electrical work.

At home I bought a very light aluminum one that may be rated for either

225 or 250 pounds. Got tired of lugging those heavy fiber ladders around.
