I read that a substantial number of girls, in my words, have their suicidal thoughts increased by Facebook, but I haven't seen how that happens.

Are there a lot of pictures of really good looking girls on Facebook?

Is that what does it?

Where are they? I only see medical advice and idle chatter and a little bit of serious chatter.

Also they say that Facebook, instagram, and one other are too big, a monopoly, and that's bad. A monopoly of what? A bunch of things no one needs?

Okay, some of their pages are important, but when mozilla** got rid of its newsgroups, some people on Usenet organized 2 or 3 newsgroups here within a few days. If your business's Facebook ad, which was free so you got it for free all these years, is closed or charges too much, you can move it to another domain, even if, oh my gosh, you have to pay.

I think the FB discussion software is terrible, very user unfriendly. I'd be ashamed to say I was one of the writers. But that's a separate issue. (I've learned if I write something important, to copy and paste and save my own copy, because it can get lost when you submit it, or deleted by a moderator and even if it's still there, it can be impossible to find.)

**Particularly annoying in my personal opinion because they were on Usenet in the first place, and mozilla somehow moved them to their own news server. Then about 5 years later, about 6 months ago, they closed them down.

facebook.com and Facebook, Inc. are 2 different things.

Facebook, Inc. owns facebook.com, Instagram, WhatsApp, and something like 75+ other companies.

Do some research. Articles on the controversy are readily available.

Who decides what someone needs? If a big name pizza chain advertises and takes orders on FB, doesn't the family owned pizza shop "need" to advertise and take orders on FB also? Technically, no. Practically, yes.

...and, oh my gosh, lose the huge audience that FB provides.

Facebook was down for awhile on the 4th.

One of the problems apparently is that FB tracks what people are interested in and then makes it easy to connect with, prompts you to engage with, people who have similar interests. That's great when it's the NY Yankees or basket weaving that's the common interest. But when you start having crazy Qanon ideas, I think FB connects you to similar people who are farther down the rabbit hole. And in a year, you're believing that reptiles are running the world, Hollywood celebrities and Democrats are drinking children's blood, etc. IDK for sure, since I'm not on FB. I get very annoyed when a restaurant is too lazy to have their own website and instead use FB. FB won't let you see much, without registering. And if I did that, I might be looting the Capitol.

re: "I get very annoyed when a restaurant is too lazy to have their own website and instead use FB."

What you call laziness, others (like business owners) call a business strategy.

As I said in the post that you responded to:

That's not laziness, that's called survival. If you want to use a billboard, would you put it on a side street, facing the dead end of a dead end street or would you put it next to the highway that millions of drivers use every day?

Take orders online, yes. On Facebook, no.

I can't imagine people go to Facebook and search for pizza near me.

They do that on google or maybe google maps, pick out the pizza store they want and look for its webpage. If they like the pizza, they save that page, and/or when they want a different store's pizza, they start with google again.

It's easier and cheaper to use FB than to have one's own webpage written and hosted. Does FB charge businesses for hosting their page? I bet they do, but it's still cheaper than doing it on one's own. And it's easier.

Says who? Do you own a business?

You started this thread admitting that you know very little about the Facebook controversies and apparently that lack of knowledge extends to the business side of Facebook also.

Here, read this:

What you can and can't imagine doesn't matter.

From

"Users can find the new option ?Order Food? in the Explore menu in the Facebook app, where you can then browse area restaurants and click ?Start Order? when you know what you want.

In addition, you?ll be able to read reviews from friends about the restaurant in question, to help you make your decision."

In addition, have you ever heard of "targeted ads"?

From the raddinteractive page:

"Micro-target your exact audiences Social media advertising for most platforms means giving advertisers the ability to focus ads towards their own target audiences using data from users ? and Facebook is no different. In fact one of the main benefits of advertising on Facebook is that the platform is very data rich. You can micro-target the audiences that are best for your business."

...and when a user clicks on an ad for a pizza place, they can place an order.

Says who? Did you do a survey of FB users and non-FB users with the munchies?

So what's your point?

They seem to be blaming instagram more for that but it is mostly a symptom of living your live and judging your self worth by your social media reputation. These people don't have a life and cruel people online can make them feel worthless.

At least that is the current psycho babble.

The 3 biggest social media companies are owned by one company and they have a disproportionate amount of influence on the 18-35 demographic.

That is the beef.

Facebook is designed to sell clicks and present as many ads as possible to the user, disguised as "content". The algorithm that decides what you see in your feed is very sophisticated. They try to give you things you will click. They don't want to make it efficient, they want you scrolling and clicking on stuff. Some of the scariest stuff is what they trick you into divulging. Those innocent questions like what street did you grow up on or what was your first car are also common security questions. They also seem to swap data with Amazon.

One trick is to only use Facebook for "groups" and don't look at your news feed at all. If you just use it to keep in touch with friends or special interests, create or join a group. They won't stuff as much spam into group feeds.

Social media sites are "productivity tools" for "mean girls". Used to be they had to have face-to-face contact to make the unpopular girls feel bad about themselves. Now they can just use their phones.

Surely everybody here has seen the gloves come off when you can't see the person you're denigrating.

No one is stopping the restaurant that wants to maximize business from doing both, being on FB and having their own website, many do. Just like companies don't just rely on one billboard.

True, but that's a business decision for them to make. Whether you are "extremely annoyed" that they "instead use FB" probably doesn't bother them too much. It's all about ROI. If they feel that putting resources into more than one advertising method, they will. Many do, many don't.

The fact is, calling it "lazy" without knowing anything about their business model is like calling the guy that sits on his front porch all day "lazy" when you know nothing about his health status. "Lazy" may not enter it at all.

This is a problem for anyone who takes social media seriously. People who are spitting on the screen as they type are certainly over thinking this. The more anonymous someone is the less I give a s*it what they say. I may still have a few neighbors who hate my guts but I don't care about that either. I will say at it's peak, there were 14 in that camp. (the ones I crushed in the HOA rejuvenation vote) Now it may only be one or two. They might even be gone by now.

It wouldn't even occur to me to order a pizza on Facebook and I guess they know that too. I have never seen an ad for it. (At least my dog hasn't, I don't have a facebook account, he does). We usually order Dominos if I am going to eat delivery pizza but it is rare. Their web site does make it easy tho. They have stored most of the stuff I ever ordered.

Sure. But you're not a teenage girl. You've got decades more experience dealing with assholes.

Cindy Hamilton

I was never that sensitive as a teenager either but I wasn't a girl. I think we were all tougher in those days tho. I never heard of anyone killing themselves because someone was mean to them. Egg their house maybe, send the fire department over there at 2AM but not killing yourself.
