fer = bear, carry, as in transfer, offer, refer.
In the Bible it refers to the planet Venus which often appears just before the sun rises, but it is a metaphor for some Eastern monarch, of Persia iirc.
How it got rephrased as "the devil" I don't remember.
NOTE..this is somewhat off topic for this group, but since this thread began off topic and has veered badly out of control since then anyway...
