i've got some nasty white heat stains on a wood-veneered table. not sure what the original finish is (polyurethane?) or what to do about them. suggestions?

Consult a local cabinet maker / shop.
Have the table refaced?
I've heard cigarette ashes and mayonaisse suggested, never tried it. Supposed to rub with the mix. Can't hurt.
