Hand rail design deck/porch PT lumber

I have built a new set of steps, using PT lumber, for a front porch. Since this on the front of the house I want the hand rails and spindles (balusters) to have a more porch like look than your standard deck. I also want to use PT lumber for the entire project. If I must, I can work some of it.

Currently there is no railing around the porch so I plan to use a 4x4 post on the outside of and bolted to the stringers at top and bottom of the steps. These posts will also be attached to concrete at the base for additional strength.

I can run a 2x6 along the inside of the post's top and attach the balusters in the traditional deck manner on the outside of the stinger and top rail. I can even cap that with handrail. BUT that leaves me with a post on the outside and the only two things I can think of to do with that post is cut a pyramid top on it or cut to follow the top rail. Neither seem visually good to me. It fact I think the pyramid top would interfere with the use of the hand rail at the top where it is most important. I should add the total rise is only about 30".

Links to pictures greatly appreciated.

Colbyt,

Is the mail addy good if I leave out _stopspam_ ? I have some pics of projects I did that may help you out, as long as you have a program such as windows viewer where as you can magnify etc.

I was going to upload to Geocites, but dog gone if I remember how to get them on a page. Probably take me a week to re-figure it out.

Hi, If I were you, I'd use Aluminum railing kit for that and forget it for years. Tony

Not familiar with an Aluminum railing.

Does it look and install like the iron railings sold at HD and Lowes?

Where do you buy it?
