Deck Staining ...

We recently had our deck scraped and re-stained.

The contractor did a good job scraping and prepping the deck (treated lumber), but then they rolled on the stain/sealer. (as opposed to spraying)

Problem: You can now see where the stain did not cover between the boards. Should we complain and insist that the stain be forced between the boards,

-or- Just let it go ?

-or- Try to spray some material between the boards ? Are there any special brushes or rollers available the will make it easy to get the stain in there ?

The right way is to get a big ugly paint brush, stain all the seams and then roll it out. Two guys can go real fast. At this point, unless you paint those seams with a 1" brush and be careful, you are going to leave stripes around the seams for a while. How important is it to you? You might be able to talk him into painting the seams and rolling it out if you are hysterically complaining. It is still just a cosmetic thing and if aesthetics are that important you will be staining again soon anyway.

I bought Ipe last time I built a deck. I'm never going to have to fool with it.

If I could see undercoated wood I would complain. Otherwise staining and sealing does not last long and in my hands water is not repelled for even a year.

My new deck, maybe 4 years old now, is Trex and looks as good today as when built. My buddy got a wood deck two years ago and had to stain it again this year.
