Cedar Shingle Stain Recommendations Wanted (2025 Update)

Powerwash and spray it , Consumer Reports has an ongoing test on products. You can make it any color you want, but weathered natural finish will look best with solid color stain

Once before I tried pressure-washing cedar shingles, which had been painted. If I got close enough to do anything, the spray left an impression in the soft wood. Besides, in this case, I don't see what would be gained by the procedure. And not knowing how the house is built, I might accidently squirt inside. It's not worth the risk.

Cedar should never be painted it rots faster. If yours were soft they were crap anyway. But then again an Idiot can cut through solid wood if he doesnt know how to use a powerwasher, Did you ever try any of the other 5 tips they come with other than 0 degree? Much more recently, when I tired one on painted shingles, I found it wasn't a good idea. It was on a garage. I wouldn't consider using one on an ancient house because the water may find a way in.

I agree, cedar shouldn't be painted, but lots of them are.

In any case, on this job, I'm not going to use a pressure washer.There's really nothing to remove on these shingles.
