Caulking shower door question

Replacing shower door and want to ask others about how they caulked the bottom track. There are two surfaces that come in contact with the bathtub on the bottom track. I have heard to caulk the surface facing the outside not facing the tub. This will allow any water that happens to get under the track to drain back into the tub. When I went to install the track and laid it on the tub there was a gap on the tub side about 1/8 to 1/4 around the center area of the track and mt first thought was to caulk it and not worry about it. I have attached a drawing to hopefully explain better.
