Just went up to the attic and (for the first time in 39 years in this house) there's a bat flying around up there.
Not sure how it got in. Had a new roof put on back in 2012. There's only two windows, screens look ok.
The house is 117 years old, perhaps there is a hole somewhere along the edge of the attic which it was able to get in through.
Any tips on getting it out?
Ir will leave in the evening. . The trick is finding out where it gets out, and blocking the hole before it gets back in.
No, but when I first went up in my attic, there were two birds looking at me, only their heads were showing, the rest was in the pink insulation. They were dead. Later I found the screening underneath the eaves was undone at one end. In fact the wood was messed up by something, but I was still able to tack it back on. (Of course that was
30 years ago. It's probably bad again by now.)
Use a trap.
BTW, try not to kill it. Though some people consider bats a nuisance and a pest, they are very helpful to the environment and reducing the mosquito population.
I'm just about certain that a bat can squeeze through a 1/4 inch opening. One scared the hell out of me one night when it came through the louvered door to the furnace room while I was watching TV in the family room.
Bats are generally harmless but you do not want to get bitten or scratched by one because they can carry rabies. This happened in the summer when I was lightly dressed so I got fully clothed, opened a door and chased it out.
Years before I had one come out of the attic while I was working there to fly around the bedroom trying to get out at night. I don't know where it went but was advised to open the windows at night, leave and it would fly out.
Close all openings with screening no matter how small.
...as long as you don't mind an attic full of bat guano...
Build a "bat house" for the bats and seal up your attic. Best of both worlds?
