Is it worth swapping my garage R-11 for some leftover R-19?

I have a few extra bundles of R-19 fiberglass batts left over from a basement job and I'm thinking about ripping out the old, thin R-11 that's currently sitting between the studs in my garage. The current stuff looks pretty rough with some sagging and tears in the paper, so it feels like a waste to just let the R-19 sit in storage. My main concern is that these are 2x4 walls. I know people ussually say that compressing thick insulation into a small space ruins the R-value, but since I’m not planning on putting up any drywall, I figured I’d just let it sit there exposed. If the insulation isn't being squished behind a wall board, does the compression rule even apply? It would just hang out past the studs into the garage space a bit. I also saw some warnings on the kraft paper about it being a fire hazard if it isn't covered by an approved material like gypsum. Is that a major risk for a workspace where I'm mostly just doing light car repairs? I want to make the space a bit warmer for the winter but I don't want to create a safety issue or end up with worse performance than the cheap R-11 I already have.


You're asking for trouble leaving that kraft-faced insulation exposed in a garage, especially if you're doing car work. That paper backing is coated in a thin layer of **asphalt adhesive** to stick it to the fiberglass. It's basically a giant fire wick. Building code requires it to be behind a thermal barrier like half-inch drywall for a reason. If a spark from a grinder or a short in an outlet hits that paper, the whole wall can go up faster than you can grab an extinguisher. On the R-value side, R-19 is meant for a 5.5-inch cavity. Putting it in a 3.5-inch 2x4 wall technically works if you let it bulge out, but it's not going to give you the performance you expect. Fiberglass works by trapping still air. When it's hanging out and floppy, you get convection loops behind and around the batts. You'll likely find that the space feels just as cold because air is still moving through the gaps between the studs and the plates.

If you really want to make the garage warmer, your time is better spent **air sealing** before you even touch the insulation. Get a few cans of spray foam and hit the bottom plates where they meet the slab, and check the rim joist area if you have access. Most of the heat loss in a garage isn't through the middle of the wall; it's through the leaks at the edges. Once you seal those up, even that old R-11 will perform significantly better than it does now.

Since you’ve already got the R-19, I’d suggest using it in the attic or the rim joists instead of the walls. Or, if you're dead set on the garage walls, you really need to put up some cheap OSB or drywall to cover it. Not only does it fix the fire hazard, but it actually holds the insulation tight against the exterior sheathing, which is how it's designed to work. Without a solid interior wall to stop the air movement, the R-value is mostly theoretical anyway.

I tried leaving thick batts exposed in my shop once and regretted it. Within a few months, the fiberglass was a magnet for sawdust and spiderwebs that I couldn't ever clean off. It also constantly puffed out past the studs, so I’d snag my sleeves or my workbench tools on it every time I moved. It looked like a disaster. I ended up pulling it down and just using the right R-13 for 2x4 walls, then stapled up some cheap pegboard. Having a solid surface to acutally hang tools on made the garage way more useful than just having fuzzy walls that caught every bit of dirt.

Whoa, I am so pumped to find this thread because I'm just starting my own garage project! I've been looking at R-19 for my ceiling too. Does anyone know if putting those shiny radiant barrier foil sheets over the insulation actually helps reflect heat back down, or is that just a total gimmick for attics? I really want to keep my space toasty while I'm working on my bike this winter without spending a fortune. Also, has anyone ever tried using those big heavy moving blankets as a temporary wall instead of drywall? I'm curious if that would help with the draft!

R-19 is typically 6-1/4" thick. Even without drywall, jamming it into a 3.5" cavity is a joke. You’ll have "fish-mouth" gaps where the fiberglass pulls away from the studs, and that's where your heat disappears. If you’re relly itching to upgrade without drywalling, go get some Rockwool Comfortbatt R-15. It’s friction-fit, fire-rated, and handles the moisture in a garage way better than standard pink fiberglass. I’ve seen guys try to save a buck using leftover basement batts in a shop and they always regret it when the mice move into that loose R-19 fluff. Sell the bundles and buy the right stuff for a 2x4 wall.

If you're dead set on skipping the drywall, you shoud realy look into Insulfoam R-Tech rigid boards instead of trying to make that R-19 work. I swapped my fiberglass for R-Tech last year and the difference is night and day. The metallic facing doesn't catch dust or sparks like paper does, and it actually reflects your shop lights so you can see what you're doing under the car. It’s way easier to wipe down than fiberglass, and you won't have it sagging out into your workspace every time you walk by.
