do i have to pay for the gas i have used the meter is about 30 years old

If you used the gas you will probably have to pay the bill. How was the meter broken? Was it reported to the gas company? Does the meter belong to the gas company or is it yours? Have they repaired or replaced it? What were or are the issuses with the meter? If the problem was on the supply side of the meter then you may be able to negociate a settlement with the gas company.
