We're finally ripping up the old carpet in our living room and I'm stuck between LVP and polished concrete. My allergies have been a nightmare lately, so getting rid of the dust traps is a top priority. My eyes get so red and itchy the second any dust builds up on the baseboards or under the couch, so I need a floor that's easy to keep spotless. I'm planning on getting a robot vacuum to run every single morning while I'm at work, but I'm worried about it just kicking more dust into the air. I know I need a sealed system and a self-emptying base with a disposable bag so I'm not breathing in a cloud every time I empty the bin. Daily scheduling is a must too. Is there anything else I shoud be hunting for? Maybe specific types of brushes that don't flick debris around or a certain suction power that acutally sucks up the fine stuff instead of just moving it? If anyone has used one of these on hard floors and noticed a real difference in thier sneezing, let me know what brands or specs worked for you.

I've done plenty of flooring installs for clients with respiratory issues, and polished concrete is usually the winner if you can handle the aesthetic. LVP is fine, but even the tightest locking joints have micro-gaps where fine dust and skin cells eventually settle over time. Concrete is a monolithic surface—there’s literally nowhere for the dust to hide, and it’s alot easier to see exactly when you need to run your cleaning cycle.
Regarding the robot, you need to look for dual rubber brushes instead of the old-school bristles. Bristle brushes are basially tiny brooms that flick dust around on hard surfaces before the suction can catch it. Rubber rollers stay closer to the floor and create a better seal. You also want a model with a variable-speed side brush. Some bots slow down that side spinner when they aren't against a wall so they don't launch crumbs and dust across the room. A sealed HEPA system is critical, but verify it’s actually a fully sealed unit. Some cheap brands put a HEPA filter in a housing that leaks air around the edges of the bin, wich completly defeats the purpose. Since you’re worried about the robot kicking up dust, look for one with a mopping attachment that uses a vibrating plate or spinning pads. Suction alone won't get that fine, static-cling layer of dust. A damp microfiber pad following behind the vacuum picks up what the air system misses. Stick with the bagged auto-empty bases like you planned. The bags usually last a month and have a self-sealing flap so you never actually see the gunk. Check your HVAC filters while you're at it. If the robot is running every morning, it's going to stir up some air, so having a **MERV 13** filter in your return vents will help catch anything that stays airborne during the cycle. Also, look for a vacuum with at least 5,000 Pa of suction if you want it to actually pull dust out of the corners.
That variable-speed side brush tip is huge. My current cheap vac just shoots crumbs across the kitchen like a pinball, so I can only imagine what it’s doing to the fine dust I can't see. Does the mapping technology matter for this? I've seen some with lasers and some with cameras, and I’m wondering if one is better at avoiding furniture so it doesn't bump into things and knock dust off the legs. Also, with those mopping pads, do you find you have to swap them out every single morning? I’m paranoid about a damp cloth sitting there and growing mold, wich whould be a whole new allergy nightmare.
LiDAR mapping is definitely superior to camera-based tech for avoiding those dust-disturbing bumps. Cameras ussually need the lights on to work, but LiDAR is precise even in the dark and detects obstacles before the bumper acutally hits them. Every time a robot taps a dusty baseboard or chair leg, it kicks a cloud of allergens right into the air.
Look for a model with dedicated obstacle avoidance sensors—usually structured light or AI. This keeps the bot from getting tangled in cords or pushing around debris. Also, check if the app allows "no-go zones." Being able to block off a particularly dusty corner or a cluttered area til you can deep-clean it manually is a lifesaver for my sinuses.
