Is California really about to ban quartz countertops over health concerns?

I've been hearing alot of chatter lately about California moving to ban engineered stone like quartz because of the silicosis risks for the guys in the fabrication shops. It sounds pretty extreme considering how popular quartz is for kitchens right now, but aparently, the dust is just wrecking people's lungs even when they're using respirators and wet saws. I was talking to a buddy who runs a granite shop and he's worried this is going to spread to other states or just make the price of everything else skyrocket. Does anyone here actualy work in a shop that deals with this stuff daily? I’m curious if the safety gear just isn't enough or if shops are just cutting corners on ventilation to save a few bucks. If they actually pull the trigger on this ban, what are we even going to use as an alternative that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Granite is okay but the maintanence is a pain for some clients, and I really don't want to go back to tile or laminate. It feels like a massive shift for the industry if the most common material we use just disappears overnight.

While natural stone has silica, engineered quartz is essentially 90% or more crushed silica held togehter by resin. If California actually pulls the trigger, we're likely looking at a massive shift toward **porcelain slabs** and sintered stone. Porcelain is tough as nails and doesn't have the same silica profile, but it’s a nightmare to fabricate because it’s so brittle. You need specialized blades and a lot of patience, which means labor costs are going to jump. We might also see a return to natural quartzite, which is beautiful and durable but way more expensive than your average mid-range quartz.

To answer the question about Corian, no, solid surface doesn't have the same silica profile. It's mostly acrylic resins and alumina trihydrate, so it's way safer to sand down. The trade-off is it scratches easily and can't handle a hot pan. If California actualy drops the hammer, watch for the big brands to pivot toward 'low-silica' engineered stone. Some manufacturers are already playing with recycled glass and bio-resins to get that silica content below 10%. It’s prolly the only way they stay relevant if the ban spreads. I’ve seen a few of these new hybrid slabs, and honestly, you can barely tell the difference from the high-silica stuff once it's installed.

Everyone forgets about crushed glass surfaces. They look similar to quartz but some brands use way less silica in the binder. The problem is the price tag is usually double what you'd pay for a standard slab of MSI or Caesarstone. If the ban happens, those niche brands are going to have a field day. I also wonder if the insurance companies will just force the issue before the state does. My liability premiums are alredy creeping up just for being associated with the trade; if carriers stop covering shops that don't have $100k in filtration, the market will shift regardless of the law.

The problem is the color consistency—if you need two slabs for a big L-shaped island, getting the vein to match up is a nightmare compared to the standard high-silica stuff. Also, don't sleep on stainless steel. It’s industrial, sure, but if we’re talking longevity and zero dust issues during the fab, it’s a solid dark horse for residential kitchens. It’s pricey to get a custom profile, but it's virtually indestructible.
