We just finished up a massive slab pour and the curing room is absolutely packed to the brim. I've got rows of cylinders lined up on the floor against the spray foam walls and there is barely enugh room to walk in there to check the heater. It feels like every time we do a big commercial job the QC side of things just takes over the entire site footprint. Does anyone else feel like they spend more time labeling and moving samples than actualy watching the trucks? I’m curious how everyone else handles the sheer volume when the project specs require sets every 50 yards or so. We’re using a mobile lab setup right now with a basic rolling tool chest for the gear, but it gets crowded fast once the buckets and lids start piling up near the door. Are you guys using dedicated refrigerated containers or just making do with whatever insulated shed you can throw togather? Managing the break schedule for a day like today is going to be a total headache for the lab tech.

The only way to survive those 50-yard set requirements without losing your mind is moving to a **shipping container** setup with tiered racking. If you’ve got rows of cylinders on the floor against spray foam, your temprature consistency is prolly all over the place anyway. We switched to a 20-foot conex with a mini-split and heavy-duty steel shelving years ago and never looked back. It keeps the floor clear so the tech isn't performing a balancing act just to get to the heater or the curing tanks.
You have to get vertical. Those plastic heavy-duty shelves from the big box stores can usually handle the weight if you don't overstack the 6x12s, but custom-welded rebar racks are even better. And defintely stop putting them near the door where the temp swings every time someone walks in. If the buckets and lids are piling up, it’s usually beacuse the stripping station is too far from the storage area. Keep the stripping bench right next to the door and the cured storage in the back so the workflow actually makes sense.
For the break schedule, tell the lab tech to start color-coding the lids with different colored markers or paint pens immediately. One color for 7-day, another for 28-day, and a third for the holds. When you’re staring at 200 identical gray cylinders, that visual shorthand is a lifesaver. It beats checking every single handwritten tag when the lab truck shows up to haul them away and everyone is in a rush to get home. It is a massive amount of grunt work, but this is exactly how alot of us got our start in the industry. I spent years in the testing world before moving into management, and the supers always remembered the guys who kept their curing rooms organized despite the volume. Just make sure your tech has a decent dolly and maybe a back brace. Moving that many samples by hand is a quick way to end up with a blown-out shoulder or that classic lopsided quagmire arm by the end of the pour.

I saw a tech yesterday struggling to lift a 6x12 out of a curing tank and it looked way heavier than I expected. Is there a standard weight for those things once they're fully set? Also, when you talk about the temperature swings near the door, does that acutally mess up the break results enough to fail a pour, or is it more of a best-practice thing to keep the engineers happy? I’d be terrified of bumping into a rack and causing a domino effect with all that weight.
A standard 6x12 is gonna run you about 28-30 lbs. Doesn’t sound like much til you’re lugging dozens of them across a muddy site. To the guy asking about the temp swings, yeah, it absolutely matters. If those initial 24 hours aren't kept within the 60-80°F sweet spot, your early breaks might come back low, leading to some very uncomfortable meetings with the EOR. If the specs allow it, try switching to 4x8 cylinders. They’re half the weight and you can fit way more on a shelf. Maturity sensors are another game changer to cut down on 'extra' cylinders for stripping. It keeps the floor clear and your back intact.
