My roommate was being a bit of a "genius" during our cookout yesterday and used one of those bulky UK-style plugs as a bottle opener for his drink since we couldn't find the real one. It worked surprisingly well beacuse those prongs are so solid, but now I’m worried about the plug itself. I looked at the pins and they don't seem bent or scratched up, but I’m wondering if that kind of physical stress can mess with the internal connections or the fuse. It's a heavy-duty lead for my PC setup, and I don't want to risk a short just because someone wanted a cold beer. shold I just toss the cable and get a new one to be safe, or am I overthinking this? The prongs on these British plugs feel like they coud survive a tank, but I’ve always been told to be careful with my gear.

The BS 1363 plug is essentially the tank of the electrical world, and using it as a makeshift bottle opener is a trick as old as the plug itself. Those solid brass pins are anchored deep into the molded plastic or heavy-duty rubber housing. If the pins aren't bent and you can't see any stress fractures in the casing, the internal integrity is almost certainly still intact.
The main concern with a "bottle opener" maneuver is the leverage applied to the earth pin or the live/neutral pins. You shold grab each pin and try to wiggle it firmly with your thumb and forefinger. If there is even a tiny bit of **mechanical play** where the pin enters the plug body, then you should replace the cable. Loose pins lead to poor contact inside the socket, wich creates heat and can eventually melt things. But if they feel as solid as a rock, the internal crimps or screw terminals haven't been budged. As for the fuse, it's held in place by two metal clips that are designed to withstand the vibration and impact of being dropped on a hard floor. Popping a bottle cap isn't going to dislodge it or damage the filament inside. The fuse is a thermal device; it cares about overcurrent, not mechanical shock from a beer bottle.
Since this is for your PC setup, you're likely drawing a decent amount of power, but nowhere near the 13-amp limit of a standard UK lead. If you want to be 100% sure, just plug it in and feel the plug head after an hour of gaming. If it’s cool to the touch, you’re fine. Honestly, these plugs are built so tough that the bottle cap is always going to lose that fight before the brass does.
Seen plenty of lads do that back in the day with the old MK rewirable plugs. Those were real chunks of kit. If it's a newer molded one, check the plastic sleeves on the live and neutral pins. If your roommate nicked that insulation while prying the cap, you might get some tracking or a nasty arc when you're plugging it in. Back when pins were solid brass top to bottom, we didn't have to worry about it, but these modern safety sleeves are fragile. If the plastic on the pins is gouged or peeling, bin the cord. Copper's cheap, but a new carpet isn't.
Spot on about the pins being tough as nails. One thing to double-check though is the strain relief where the cable enters the plug. If he was relly torquing it to get that cap off, he might have strained the cord grip inside. Give the wire a firm pull right where it meets the plug. If there's any movement or the outer jacket looks like it's pulling away, you might have some tension on the internal terminal screws now. It’s a quick check but keeps the wires from eventually pulling loose while you're mid-game.
