Small ears...? (the corn, not mine...)

Howdy,

What environmental factors might cause the ears of corn (two different varieties) to be rather small.

They are well formed, have great taste, are in proper proportion, but are extremely small.

Any ideas?

Sincere thanks,

Corn requires LOTS of fertilizer. Also, planting too close together can cause this.

And plenty-o-water, too. 2-4" per week after the silk appears.
