end of season

we had our first major frost about a week ago which is very late, but since then the weather has been beautiful so i'm coming along pretty well on getting gardens cleaned up and put up for winter.

the last gardens inside the fenced area are almost all done or close enough that we'll be fine on those with the last tomato garden getting mostly done this past Thursday. i've left the last trench in there still open so i can put some other garden debris in it before filling it back in.

other than that i only have weeding some gardens outside the fence and planting the garlic for the next harvest to finish up and i can spend the rest of the year weeding and it will only take a few more hours to get the garlic patch ready and planted.

as for further harvest related things i only have brown paper bags of beans to shell out which will take me some time to finish but that can happen over the next few months once the weather starts keeping me inside.

in the meantime the weather looks to be very nice for being outside at least part of the day.

I just came inside from picking green beans from my fall crop plus a few from my half-hanging-in-there summer planting. Not enough to cook, but if I can find a few more over the next couple of days, I'll cook a small potfull.

The temperatures have been dropping into the 40sF every night this week, but no frost yet. The weatherheads are predicting one Monday night though, so I'll probably have some cleaning up to do of what's left of the more tender items if it hits.

I still have lots of little shallots that I'll probably try to re-plant as sets since they usually winter over fairly well.

Overall a so-so season for me since we had long spells of upper 90s and triple digit heat indeces during the summer.

The best yield was from a couple of pot-sized cucumber plants that I planted for a friend...who died just as they were ready to pick. :( I won't be growing them next year. <sigh>

Nyssa, who finally gave up and turned on the heat pump this morning

i normally eat beans fresh as i'm standing there in the garden if there are only a few of them.

it was one of those interesting seasons for me too but i'm glad that i was able to keep up with the weeding i needed to have done because last year i didn't and too many plants got overgrown and i didn't have much of a bean harvest (but it was good enough in that i had samples of beans to grow again for this year).

sorry for the loss of a friend.

we've been running the heat in the morning most days but that is because Mom likes it warmer in here. the propane tank is getting low enough i'll have to call them for a refill in the next few weeks. i don't like calling too early as then it means we sometimes end up with a lot of propane sitting in a tank all summer doing nothing and sure it shouldn't leak or be wasted but i also hate spending money when i don't have to.
