I recently bought an abandoned house that had some squatters living in it a few years back, and they left an old propane tank hooked up to a grill right in the yard. It's been sitting out there trough at least three or four NE winters now, just totally exposed to the snow and ice. I’m a charcoal guy myself, so I have no idea how these things hold up over time or if the weather ruins them. The tank feels pretty heavy, so I’m assuming it’s mostly full, but I’m worried about the valves or the seals rotting out after being out in the elements for so long. Is it even safe to touch at this point, or shoud I be worried about it leaking if I try to disconnect it? I'd like to get it off the property, but I don't want to risk putting a ticking time bomb in my car to take it to a disposal site. Does anyone know the best way to get rid of somthing like this? I'm mostly just concerned about a leak while handling it. If the seals are shot, I'm not sure if there's a specific way to check for that before I start messing with the connection or trying to load it up.

If that tank hasn't leaked out by now, it’s not going to suddenly blow up just because you touch it. Propane tanks are designed to sit through years of harsh weather, and if there was even a tiny pinhole or a dry-rotted seal, the gas would have bled out into the atmosphere a long time ago. Give it a good shake; if you feel liquid sloshing around, it’s still pressurized and sealed. If it’s heavy but silent, it might just be a thicker-walled tank or full of water from a disconnected hose, but usually, the **slosh test** is the best way to confirm if it's still holding gas.
Don't worry too much about the rust on the outside. Those tanks are made of thick steel, and the valves are almost always brass, which handles those Northeast winters without much trouble. The rubber O-ring inside the valve assembly is the only part that really dries out, but as long as the valve is closed tight, the gas isn't going anywhere. You can check for a leak by spraying some soapy water on the valve and connection area. If you see bubbles forming, then you have a leak, but if it stays quiet, you're fine to move it. When you load it into your car, the most important thing is to keep it **upright and secured**. Never lay a propane tank on its side in a vehicle because if the pressure relief valve triggers, it can spray liquid instead of gas, which is way more dangerous. Roll the windows down just to be safe and take it straight to your destination without stopping for errands along the way.
Since you’re a charcoal guy, you have a few easy options to get rid of it. The fastest way is a tank exchange at a gas station or hardware store. They usually don’t care if the tank is rusty or ten years old; they’ll take it and send it back to be refurbished or scrapped. You can just leave it with them if you talk to the clerk. Or, just list it for free on a community board. People who grill or use patio heaters will jump at a free tank because they can just trade it in themselves for a fresh one.
Have you ruled out the weight being something other than propane? If it’s been sitting through five NE winters, you might just be feeling moisture or internal scale. A slosh test isn't always a guarantee it's actually gas. I’d also check the date on the handle. If it’s over 12 years old, have you checked if your local exchange will even accept it? They can be pretty picky about expired or heavily pitted tanks. If the valve is seized solid from the ice and salt, you might have a harder time getting rid of it than you think.

That’s exactly right about the triangular OPD handle being the dealbreaker for exchanges. Since it’s been out in the yard for years, check the little vent hole on the side of the main valve too. Mud daubers and spiders love nesting in those tiny openings during NE summers. So I checked the tank and it did have the triangular OPD valve handle like a couple of you suggested. I was worried about spiders or mud daubers in the vent, but it looked clean.
