Why would someone cut a three-inch gap at the bottom of a playroom door?

We just moved into a new house and the previous owners left a realy strange setup in one of the bedrooms. There is a small attached playroom area—it’s basially a finished walk-in closet with its own window and HVAC vent—but the door has been modified in a way I’ve never seen. It was clearly cut down on purpose to leave a huge three-inch gap at the floor. It gets weirder becuase there is a childproof knob cover on the inside of that door, and then another safety latch on the outside of the actual bedroom door. Someone I talked to suggested the gap might be for sliding food or toys under the door while it’s closed, wich feels a little unsettling to think about. I’m trying to stay objective and figure out if this is just some specific type of childproofing I’m not familiar with. Maybe it was for a kid who tended to wander or had specific sensory requirements? It feels way too deliberate to be a mistake, and I’m just wondering if anyone in the community has encountered a door modification like this before.

Don't let the handyman's comment get to you. People who don't work with HVAC or child-proofing tend to jump to the most dramatic conclusions. If the room has its own window and a vent, it was clearly designed for comfort and safety. It was almost certainly just a specialized **sensory room** or a nursery for a kid who was a 'high-energy' sleeper. I'd just replace the door slab if the gap bothers you, but check your airflow first to make sure the room doesn't get stuffy without that vent clearance.

I'm not totally sold on the HVAC thing being the only reason for a gap that large. Have you ruled out the possibility that they just had a really thick, high-pile carpet or a shaggy rug in there? I've seen DIYers butcher a door bottom simply becuase they didn't want to deal with the friction every time they opened it. Also, regarding the locks, is it possible the previous owners just had a large dog they were trying to keep out of the nursery? Some people use those childproof covers to stop clever pets from turning levers. It might be less about 'containing' a kid and more about simple pet management.

While the HVAC pressure balancing hypothesis is logically sound, one must consider that a three-inch undercut is significantly excessive for mere airflow and likely indicates the historical presence of a specialized transition strip or a heavy-duty acoustic sweep that has since been removed. I suspect the door was modified to accomodate an aftermarket automatic bottom seal that failed, or perhaps more likely, the previous occupants utilized an oversized, high-density rubber play mat wich necessitated such a drastic clearance to avoid binding during the swing arc. Have you examined the hinge pins for premature wear, as such aggressive modifications often suggest the door was being cycled with unusual frequency or under significant mechanical stress?

I’ve done this exact thing for my cat. I didn't want to deal with the hassle of installing a proper pet door, so I just took a circular saw to the bottom of the closet door. It lets the cat in and out and helps me see if I left the light on inside without opening it. If you hate the look, I fixed a similar 'oops' on another door by adding a wide aluminum kick plate and a brush sweep. It covers the gap but still lets the air move.

I don't know much about home renovation, but does a gap that big mess with the sound? If I replaced the door with a normal one like people are suggesting, would the pressure actually make it hard to open? I’m just a beginner here, but I’ve noticed some doors in my place 'whoosh' when they close and I wonder if that's the same thing. Also, would a gap like that be for a specific type of pet, or just for the air? I'm curious if they had a giant robot vacuum or something that needed to get in and out of there.
