My place was built back in 1875 and has this massive fireplace in the basement that's connected to the boiler room. I've noticed these four specific holes that just won't stop seeping. There's one about the size of a nickel in the corner of the boiler room that's maybe six inches deep, and two more right at the door frame footings. There's even a tiny one, maybe pinky-sized, right on the hearth. I did a test with some food dye and confirmed these are definately where all the moisture is coming from. I’ve tried everything to keep the basement dry like fixing the gutters and regrading the yard, but the water just keeps coming thru these gaps. Whenever I use the wet vac to suck the water out, they just refill almost instantly like there's an underground stream or a hidden channel down there. It feels like a losing battle. Does anyone know what these were actualy for? I'm tempted to just shove some hydraulic cement in there and call it a day, but I'm worried about the pressure building up or making things worse elsewhere. Should I plug them or is there a reason an old house would have these weird channels built into the floor?

Those holes sound like part of an intentional hydrostatic relief system or an old interior drainage network. Back in the late 1800s, builders sometimes provided a path for water to travel under the foundation if they knew the water table was high or if there was a natural spring nearby. If you plug them with hydraulic cement, you aren't acutally solving the water problem; you’re just turning your basement floor into a dam. That pressure has to go somewhere, and it will eventually find a way through the mortar joints in your stone walls or, worse, cause your slab to heave and crack.
The small hole on the hearth is almost certainly an **ash dump** meant for sweeping soot into a pit below, wich was standard for an 1875 build. But those other channels near the door frame footings and the boiler room corner suggest the fireplace foundation was integrated with a primitive drainage system. The fact that they refill instantly after you vacuum them out tells you that you’re dealing with a high water table. All that regrading and gutter work you did is great for surface water, but it won't touch the ground-level pressure pushing up from below.
Instead of trying to fight the water with cement, you shoud look into installing a proper **sump pump**. If the water is already being channeled to these specific points, you have a head start. You want to give that water a path of least resistance that leads into a basin and then out of the house, rather than letting it pool on your floor. Trenching from those holes to a central pit is a big job, but it's the only way to keep an old basement like that dry when you're sitting on a spring. I've worked on plenty of these old stone foundations and trying to seal them up usally just makes the moisture migrate somewhere else. Since you've already confirmed these are the primary sources with food dye, you know exactly where the pressure is localized. Check if the water is clear or smells like sulfur—clear usually points to a clean spring. Either way, stop the wet vac cycle and focus on a permanent pump solution.
Those holes near the door frame footings sound like they coud rot the wood pretty fast if it stays wet. Are the frames already showing signs of soft spots or mold? I’d be worried the water is soaking into the door frame itself while it's pooling there.
Also, if you do the dye test again, maybe try using diffrent colors in each hole to see if they all connect to each other under the floor. If it's an old well or a spring, you might even see the water moving in a specific direction. Does the water level change when it rains, or is it just the same amount all year round?
If those holes are right at the door frame footings, you're looking at a nightmare for your door alignment. In 1875, they probaly used heavy heartwood for those basement doors, but constant moisture will still cause the bottom rail to swell. Once that happens, the door won't swing right and you'll end up fighting it just to get it open.
Check your hardware too. If those are original iron strap hinges or pintles, the constant humidity from those 'springs' will seize the pins in no time. If you don't manage the water, that door and the frame are going to rot from the floor up. You’ll lose a piece of history if that wood keeps wicking up all that moisture.
I’d be looking at your door hinges immediately. If that water is constant, the humidity in that boiler room is probably through the roof, and those old heavy doors will start sagging as the screws lose thier grip in the damp wood. If you can’t stop the water yet, maybe seal the end grain of the door frame with some epoxy. I had a similar setup in a Victorian cellar and the door eventually got so heavy from water absorption it just ripped the top hinge right out of the masonry. Check if the door is dragging on the floor yet—that's usally the first sign the wood is saturated and the frame is failing.
Since those holes are right at the door frame footings, you're likely wicking moisture directly into the end grain of the jambs. In an 1875 build, you probably have thick white oak or pine frames, and once that water gets inside, it'll travel inches up the wood trough capillary action before you even see the surface rot.
If you can't get the sump pump in immediately, consider undercutting the door frames by a quarter inch and slipping in some lead shims or plastic spacers. It’ll stop the frame from acting like a sponge while you deal with the hydrostatic pressure. Check if the doors are dragging on the floor yet—that’s usually the first sign the wood is saturated and expanding.
