Just moved into this 1950s ranch and found a wierd stone cutout tucked away in the back of the basement. It’s got rough masonry walls that look pretty weathered, and the floor is just loose gravel. There's even a random stack of bricks and a flat slab sitting in the corner. I'm not sure if it’s an old coal chute or just some weird foundation design. It rained hard yesterday so I finally checked to see if it was leaking. To my surprise, it’s bone dry, though the air is definately chilly. It’s about 40 degrees outside and you can realy feel the cold coming off those stones. I'm wondering if I shoud seal it off or put some foam insulation over the opening. If I leave it open, I'm just losing heat, but I don't want to mess up the ventilation. Does anyone know what these little nooks were for? I'm worried that if I just slap some insulation over it, I might cause moisture issues later.

That’s a classic coal room, though in a 1950s build, it might have been intended as a root cellar for food storage. The fact that it’s dry after a heavy rain is a huge win—most of these turn into indoor ponds becuase the gravel floor acts like a sump. Since it’s 40 degrees outside and you’re feeling the draft, you're basicly looking at a massive thermal bridge sucking heat right out of your main basement area and into the earth.
If you want to stop the heat loss without causing rot, don't just slap fiberglass batts against the stone. That’s how you get mold. Start by dealing with that gravel. I’d lay down a heavy **6-mil vapor barrier** over the rocks and then maybe some pressure-treated sleepers if you want a real floor. For the walls, rigid foam board is your best friend here. Use foam-compatible adhesive to stick **XPS foam** (the pink or blue stuff) directly to the masonry. This creates a continuous thermal break and keeps the moisture from the stones from hitting your interior air.
You can also go the furring strip route if the walls are too wonky for flat foam. Anchor some pressure-treated 2x2s to the stone, then tuck **rockwool** between them. Rockwool is great because it’s hydrophobic and won't slump if it gets a little damp. Finish it off with some plywood or mold-resistant drywall. If you're worried about the cold air coming trough the opening into the basement, a solid-core door with good weatherstripping is way more effective than just hanging a piece of foam over the hole. Just keep an eye on the humidity once you seal it up. These old stone nooks sometimes "breathe" for the rest of the foundation. If you seal it tight and the basement starts feeling swampy, you might need to run a dehumidifier nearby. But leaving a giant uninsulated stone box open to your heated space is just throwing money away every winter. You aren't going to ruin the house by insulating a cold spot, provided you use materials that don't hold water.
I've heard those XPS foam boards can be a fire hazard if you don't cover them with drywall. Is that true for a small basement nook like this? I'm also wondering how hard it is to actualy cut those sheets to fit against the rough masonry. It's super uneven back there and I don't want to leave huge gaps. If I use that foam-compatible adhesive, will it actually hold on walls that are kind of crumbly, or do I need to scrub the stone down first?
If the masonry is crumbly, adhesive alone will fail when the surface layer just flakes off. I'd wire brush the loose stuff first, then look at spray foam. It's the only way to get a perfect seal on those jagged rock walls. For the fire code thing, yeah, you ussually need a thermal barrier like drywall or even specialized fire-rated paint if it’s a tight crawlspace, but check your local town office. Also, pay close attention to the rim joist right above where the chute was. Often there’s a massive air leak there that people miss while focusing on the walls. Seal that with some canned foam and you’ll notice the temp difference immediatly.
Check the top of those walls where the masonry meets the floor joists. In those old ranch setups, the "draft" usally isn't just the cold stone—it's often air leaking trough the rim joist right above the chute. If you do the walls but miss the top, you'll still be freezing. I used canned spray foam for the gaps around my rim joists and it made a massive difference. Also, that flat slab you found might be an old cap for an exterior access point. If there’s a buried hatch outside, make sure that’s sealed up tight from the exterior too, or you're just fighting a losing battle against the wind.
