Yes,you shouldn't have bought that Aldi welder an could of gone for an mig welder instead.

ps do make sure you wear a full face welder helmet and the moment you strike the arc drop the helmet down over ya face, because flashback is a very painfull irratation to the eye/s...a bit like someone rubbing the backs of your eyeballs with a brillo pad.

Can I suggest that you check out your local further education colleges, for a short course? It will help as it is hard to know whether you are doing it properly, just from a book. Even a book with a lot of pictures.

Having someone, checking what you are doing, is vital, IMHO, if you are ever going to be doing anything load-bearing.

========================= Whether you use a full-face mask or a hand-held have it FULLY in front of your face BEFORE you strike the arc. There is no safe interval for viewing the arc without the mask.

Practise striking an arc by dragging the end of the rod lightly along the surface of the weld material so that it strikes a series of sparks which will be enough to show you where to start welding.
