I finally finished up my build last weekend and got the string lights hung up over the black dining set. It looks great against the tan siding of the house and the wire mesh railing really keeps the view open to the yard. But I've noticed somethig that's bothering me. Every time I walk over toward the grill, there’s this weird bounce in the boards. It isn't a huge movement, but it definately feels springy underfoot when I'm carrying a tray of food out. I followed the joist spacing on the plans, so I thougt it woud be solid as a rock. Is this just something that happens with pressure-treated wood as it settles, or did I maybe miss a blocking step somewhere? I don't want the guests to feel like they're on a trampoline during our first cookout.

That bounce usually comes down to the span of your joists rather than the wood settling. Even if you followed the spacing on a set of plans, 2x8 joists can feel pretty springy if they are spanning more than 10 or 11 feet without a beam underneath. Pressure-treated lumber is heavy, expecially when it's still wet from the yard, and that extra weight adds to the deflection you feel when walking near the grill area. You can try adding **mid-span blocking** first if you haven't alredy. Cut blocks from the same joist material and install them in a straight line or a slightly staggered pattern down the center of the span. This helps distribute the load to the neighboring joists so one single board isn't taking the full impact of your step. It won't make it rock solid if the span is too long, but it definitely cuts down on the lateral movement and vibration.
If blocking doesn't do the trick, the most effective fix is **sistering** the joists. You'll need to buy more 2x8s and nail or bolt them directly alongside your existing joists. This effectively doubles the strength of your floor frame. It’s a pain to do after the decking is already down, but it’s the standard way to stiffen up a floor that feels like a trampoline. Another option if you have the clearance is to install a drop beam underneath the joists at the midpoint. Propping that up with a couple of 6x6 posts on concrete piers will eliminate every bit of that bounce. It’s more digging and concrete work, but it solves the problem permanently. Check your span charts for the specific species of wood you used, because sometimes the 'code minimum' still allows for more flex than most people acutally want in a high-traffic area.
Check your joist hangers. If you used standard Simpson Strong-Tie LU28s but didn't hit every single hole with 10d or 16d nails, you're going to get movement. Also, what kind of decking are you running? If you’ve got somthing like Trex Transcend or 5/4 boards on 16" centers, you’ll always feel more flex than if you went 12" on center. I always overbuild with 2x10s for anything over a 9-foot span becuase code minimum is ussually the bare minimum for comfort. If you can't get under there to sister, look at Simpson DTT2Z connectors to tighten the frame to the house.
Back in the day, we didn't just rely on blocking; we used solid X-bridging with 1x3s to relly tie those joists togather. Modern plans usually stick to the bare minimum code, which is why your deck feels like a trampoline. If you've allready got your decking down, crawl under there and check for 'crown up' installation. If you accidentally put a few joists crown down, they'll sag and bounce like crazy every time you walk by. I learned that the hard way on a wrap-around back in '94. Give those joists a look from underneath while someone else walks on top to see where the flex is actually starting.
If you are allready under there adding blocking, you shold defintely install the MiTek Deck Bridging. I used their lateral load connectors on my last build and the difference in stiffness was night and day compared to just using scrap wood blocks. Standard blocking can shrink as the wood dries, but the MiTek steel bridging keeps everything tight. It’s the easiest way to kill that trampoline feel without having to rip up your boards or dig new footings for a center beam.
Oh man, congrats on the first build!! I’m just starting to plan my own small platform deck and this thread is super helpful for my anxiety about it being shaky. I'm definately taking notes on the steel bridging! Quick question though—since you mentioned you just finished, what kind of string lights did you go with? I’m looking for some that can handle alot of wind without shattering against the house siding, and yours sound like they look awesome with the black furniture!
