Should I trust these adjustable plastic feet for a new deck build?

Me and my father-in-law are putting together a low-profile deck over a gravel patch in the backyard. We're using those adjustable plastic pedestals sitting on top of concrete pavers to level everythign out. It feels really sturdy while we're walking on the pressure-treated joists, but I'm just a bit paranoid about the long-term stability of using feet like this instead of traditional dug-in posts. He's convinced they're the best thing since sliced bread becuase they make leveling the uneven ground so much faster. We’ve got metal hangers on all the intersections and everything is squared up, but I'm wondering if anyone here has seen these fail after a few seasons. The ground is pretty packed down gravel, so I'm not too worried about sinking, but I keep thinking about what happens when we have ten people standing on it next summer. Is there anything extra we shoud be doing to beef up the frame before we start screwing down the actual decking boards?


Those adjustable pedestals are acutally pretty common for low-profile builds, but thier success depends entirely on how you’ve distributed the weight and managed lateral movement. The plastic itself is usually rated for a high vertical load, but they have almost zero lateral strength. If you have ten people on that deck and everyone starts moving at once, you’re relying entirely on the weight of the structure to keep it from shifting sideways. Since you aren't anchored into the ground with traditional posts, you really need to make sure your **joist spacing** is tight—ideally 16 inches on center. If you're at 24 inches, you're going to feel alot of flex once the boards go down. Another thing to watch for is the pavers shifting under those feet. Even on packed gravel, water can undermine the leveling over a few seasons. If a paver tilts even slightly, the plastic pedestal is now taking the load at an angle, wich is how they eventually crack or slide out. I'd suggest double-checking that every single paver is dead level before you lock the pedestals in. And since it's a floating deck, keep an eye on the edges. If wind can get under it, a big gust can literally lift a light frame if it isn't weighted down or skirted properly.

To beef it up before the decking goes on, you should defintely add **mid-span blocking** between the joists. It stops the joists from twisting under load and helps distribute the weight across the whole frame rather than just the two joists someone is standing on. Also, make sure you're using high-quality structural screws for the hangers. If you just used standard deck screws for the metal connectors, swap them out now for the proper galvanized hanger nails or structural connector screws. Standard screws will shear off under the weight of a crowd. If you’re really worried about it moving, you can drive a few pieces of rebar or long ground spikes through the frame into the dirt in a couple of inconspicuous spots. It won't act as a load-bearing post, but it'll give you that extra peace of mind against lateral shifting. As long as the frame is rigid and your blocking is solid, those feet should hold up fine for a backyard project.

That rebar idea for lateral movement is somethig I hadn't thougth of. My father-in-law and I were looking at those pedestals too, but I'm curious about the freezing and thawing. If the ground under the gravel moves during winter, does the whole deck just tilt?

I'm worried if one side sinks an inch, we'll have to pull up all the boards just to reach the adjustable feet again. Is there a way to adjust them from the top after it's finished or do you just have to hope they stay level forever?

To handle the access issue, I ussually recomend using top-down screws on a few strategic boards instead of hidden fasteners everywhere. If you ever need to level it out after a bad winter, you can just back those screws out and reach the pedestals without tearing the whole thing apart. Also, keep an eye on the drainage. If water pools around those pavers, the gravel will eventually wash out or turn to mush, and that’s when you get the tilting. I'd throw some extra crushed stone around the perimeter to keep things dry underneath.

Make sure you're thinking about airflow since it's sitting so low to the ground. Moisture gets trapped under there easily, and even pressure-treated joists will rot if they can't dry out. I’d leave a slightly bigger gap between your deck boards to let the air circulate.

Also, if you’re using composite boards instead of wood, just be aware they’re alot heavier. That extra weight actualy helps keep those pedestals from shifting, but it means you might need a few more feet than the instructions say to avoid sagging.

One thing people miss is the rim joist support. If you're using those pedestals, try to tuck them slightly back from the edge of the frame. If the feet are flush with the outside joist, standing on the edge creates a lot of leverage on that single point. I ussually set my outer ring of pedestals back about 3 inches. It centers the load better over the pavers and hides the plastic from view. Also, check the specific load rating for your brand. Some cheaper kits are only rated for 800 lbs. That sounds like a lot, but once you factor in the lumber weight and some heavy furniture, you're eating into that margin fast.
