Should I be worried about these cracks in my second-story deck footings?

I was out back fixing some string lights on my second-story deck and noticed some pretty deep cracks in the concrete footings. The whole thing is about ten feet off the ground and held up by three main posts, so seeing the cement start to split is defintely stressing me out. The house has that stucco finish on the bottom level and everthing else looks fine, but these footings are the only thing keeping the whole structure from leaning. We don't even use the deck that much, maybe just a few times a week for coffee, but it's still a long drop. I'm trying to figure out if I can just go to the hardware store and grab some heavy-duty patch material to seal them up. Or is this a sign that the foundation is actualy failing and needs a pro to come look at it? I’m hoping it’s just cosmetic from the ground settling, but I don’t want to take any chances with somthing this high up.


Nine times out of ten, those deep cracks happen because the builder buried the posts directly into the wet concrete instead of using a proper metal saddle. Wood absorbs moisture and expands, and that internal pressure is more than enough to split a footing wide open. If you see the wood going straight into the cement without a bracket, a patch kit from the hardware store is a waste of money. The wood will just keep moving and the cracks will reappear in a few months because the source of the pressure is still there.

A ten-foot drop is a massive safety concern, expecially if the whole thing is riding on just three posts. If those are 4x4s, they’re likely undersized for that height anyway. Most modern codes require **6x6 posts** for anything over a few feet off the ground to handle the load and prevent swaying. If the footings are splitting, it means the structural foundation is compromised and the posts could eventually kick out or sink further into the ground as the concrete continues to degrade. The right way to fix this involves shoring up the deck with temporary supports so you can break out the old concrete and pour new piers. You want to use **post bases** that keep the wood an inch or two above the concrete surface. This keeps the post dry and prevents the expansion issues that caused the cracking in the first place. It also ensures the weight is distributed properly across the entire pier rather than just pushing through the center.

And since you mentioned the stucco finish, check where the deck attaches to the house. If the builder cut corners on the footings by burying the posts, they probly skipped the proper flashing and spacers on the ledger board too. It might look fine on the outside, but water trapped against that stucco can rot your house rim joist. It is definately time to get a pro out there to evaluate the whole structure before someone gets hurt.

I'm looking at my own deck now and starting to panic a bit. I always thought wood in concrete was just how it was done for stability, so learning that it acutally causes the cracks is a huge eye-opener. How do you even go about shoring it up to fix the footings? That sounds like a massive job involving jacks or somthing. Is that something a regular person can do with rented gear, or are we talking specialized equipment that only contractors have? I really don't want the whole thing to come down while trying to fix it.

Grab a long screwdriver and poke the wood right where it enters the cement. If it sinks in like butter, the post is alredy rotting from the inside out and those cracks are the least of your problems. Shoring it up isn't too bad with a few 6x6 temporary supports and some rented screw jacks, but you need a solid flat surface for the jacks to sit on. If the ground there is just soft dirt, you'll need to throw down some thick 2x12 scraps to spread the load so the jack doesn't just bury itself while you're trying to lift the deck.

You should also check how deep those footings actualy go. If the builder didn't get them below the frost line, the ground is basially trying to shove the whole deck upward every winter, which will snap concrete like a twig regardless of the post brackets.

If you notice the deck swaying or vibrating more than usual when you're out there, that's a bad sign. Check the connections at the top of the posts too. If the bottom is shifting, the top is likely straining against the bolts. Better to get a structural engineer to sign off on a repair plan before you spend a dime on materials.

Take a look at the lateral bracing while you're down there. At ten feet up with only three posts, you should see some diagonal 2x4s or 4x4s connecting the posts to the joists or beams. If those are missing or just nailed in with a couple of sinkers, that deck is basially a giant sail in the wind, which puts even more torque on those cracked footings.

Also, check the diameter of the concrete piers. A lot of builders just use those skinny 8-inch sonotubes, but for a second-story load, you really need a wider footprint at the base to prevent sinking. If the concrete is tiny and cracked, it’s a recipe for a tilt.
