Can I use threaded rods instead of L-brackets for my deck post install?

I'm currently reinforcing some of the structural framing on my back deck and I'm looking for a way to beef up the post connections. I've got these new pressure-treated joists tying into the original beam, and I'm trying to figure out if I can skip the standard nail-in L brackets for the lateral load requirement. Instead of those flimsy brackets, I was thinking about running a couple of long threaded rods through the perpendicular joist and the outer rim joist. I'm thinking if I use heavy-duty nuts and washers on both ends, it should pull everythign togehter way tighter than a few nails would. It feels like a more solid tension-tie system, expecially for the corner posts where things always seem to wiggle a bit over time. Do you think a building inspector would have an issue with this custom setup? I know the code usally calls for specific hardware, but this seems way beefier than the off-the-shelf stuff you get at the big box stores. I already have the rods and I'm just wondering if anyone else has gone this route before. Just want to make sure I'm not overcomplicating it or creating a wierd moisture trap between the wood.


An inspector is almost definitely going to flag that setup because it doesn't have a **manufacturer load rating**. Even if your threaded rods are thick enough to tow a truck, the building code ussually dictates that structural connectors must be tested and approved for that specific application. Without a stamp or a spec sheet from a company like Simpson or MiTek, you’re basially relying on the inspector’s mood that day, and most won't take the liability. Most of the time, they want to see a product name they recognize in the ICC-ES reports.

One big technical hurdle you're going to hit is the chemistry of the wood itself. Modern pressure-treated lumber is loaded with copper, which is incredibly corrosive to standard steel. If those rods aren't **hot-dip galvanized** or 304/316 stainless steel, the wood will literally eat through them in a few seasons. Standard zinc plating you find on cheap rods at the hardware store won't last. You'll end up with a pile of rust inside the joist where you can't even see the damage happening. It looks solid on the outside while the core is turning to dust.

The standard "flimsy" brackets like the DTT2Z or similar tension ties are actually designed to allow for a tiny bit of flex and specific fastener patterns that prevent the wood from splitting. When you crank down on a heavy-duty nut and washer, you risk crushing the wood fibers or causing a massive split right down the grain of your rim joist as the wood shrinks and expands with the seasons. Those off-the-shelf ties are engineered to handle the 1,500 lbs of lateral force required by code without destroying the lumber they're attached to. If you really want to overbuild it, just use the heavier-duty versions of the approved tension ties. It's way less of a headache during the final inspection. If you stick with the rods, at least make sure you're using massive **plate washers** to distribute the load and go with stainless steel to avoid the corrosion issue. But you’re likely overcomplicating a problem that’s allready been solved by much easier, code-compliant hardware.

That bit about the wood crushing acutally makes alot of sense. I’m a total newbie, but I noticed my local lumber yard has these massive square washers that look like they're for a bridge or something. Are those the 'plate washers' you mentioned? I was planning to use something similar for my stairs, but now I'm worried I'll just end up over-tightening them and ruining the pressure-treated wood. How do you even know when it's tight enugh if you don't have a torque wrench?

Those big plate washers are usally for ledger bolts or 6x6 structural posts. On a standard rim joist, you'll find that as the pressure-treated lumber dries out and shrinks—and it will—those nuts will just rattle loose anyway. You’d be out there every six months with a wrench trying to keep it tight. The rated tension ties use SDS screws or nails that 'bite' the wood differently, so they don't rely purely on the compression of the joist to stay secure. It’s way more reliable for keeping those corner posts from getting the wobbles down the line.

Honestly, trying to drill a perfectly level hole trough a perpendicular joist and a rim joist is a huge pain in the neck. If your drill bit wanders even a tiny bit, those plate washers are going to sit at a weird angle and look like garbage. Plus, you’re basially creating a giant straw for water to get deep into the center of your wood where the treatment might not have fully penetrated. I'd just stick with the Simpson ties and some structural screws like LedgerLoks. They’re fast, they pull tight, and they won't get you a fail sticker on your permit.

I ran into this exact dilemma last summer. One thing people miss is that the IRC specifically calls out four lateral load connections per deck now. If you go the custom rod route, you’re not just fighting the inspector on the rod itself, but on the whole assembly's failure point. I ended up just biting the bullet and getting the DTT2Z ties. It took half the time becuase you don't have to bore thru the whole framing. Plus, those Simpson ties come with the SDS screws that have a specialized coating for the ACQ lumber, so you don't have to worry about the hidden rust nightmare.
