Is there a structural reason for these shallow concrete collars?

I've been watching the crew work on the new shade structure down the street and the way they're finishing the footings has me scratching my head. The main posts are already set, but they've just put these 8-inch cardboard forms around the base at ground level for a final pour. It seems really shallow for such a tall structure. Does this actually add any real stability when the wind starts pulling on those sails? I know concrete is pretty weak when it comes to tension, so I'm struggling to see how this little bit of extra weight keeps the connection from failing if things start heaving. Maybe it's just a way to encase the mounting hardware and keep the nuts from vibrating loose over time. It just feels like a weird finishing touch if it isn't doing some heavy lifting.


Those 8-inch cardboard forms aren't there for structural stability or to stop the wind from ripping the sails out of the ground. The heavy lifting is already being done by the deep piers buried well below the surface. What you're seeing is likely a **rain cap** or a finish collar designed to protect the critical connection points from the elements. If you leave anchor bolts and base plates exposed at grade, they'll collect standing water and debris, wich leads to rust and localized pitting on the hardware that actualy holds the structure up. Another big reason for that secondary pour is strictly about aesthetics and grade management. Sometimes the main structural footing is poured slightly low to ensure it stays below the frost line or to account for future landscaping. If the original pour ended up an inch or two below where the final mulch or dirt is going to sit, they'll use those Sonotubes to bring the concrete up to a uniform height. It creates a clean, finished look rather than leaving a messy, jagged footing top visible to everyone walking by.

It also acts as a deterrent against tampering. By encasing the nuts and the threaded rod in concrete, you're making it alot harder for someone with a large wrench to come along and loosen the assembly. It’s a lot easier to vandalize a structure when the mounting hardware is sitting right there in the open.

But if you see them filling the gap *underneath* the metal plate first, that's **non-shrink grout**. That stuff is vital because it transfers the load of the post evenly across the entire surface of the footing. Without it, the weight of that shade structure woud be resting entirely on the thin leveling nuts, which could eventually cause the bolts to bend or snap under high wind loads. Once that grout is set, the final 8-inch pour just dresses the whole thing up and keeps the water out.

Spot on. I’ve seen crews skip this and two years later the B7 studs are a rusted mess. They're likely using a standard Sonotube to form that collar. One thing to watch is if they’re using a high-flow mix or something like Quikrete 5000 for that cap to handle the foot traffic. If those sails are big, the uplift on the actual pier is massive, so that little 8-inch pour is also great for shedding water away from the baseplate so you don't get a pool sitting there eating the galvanized coating. It’s a pro move for longevity.

One detail people often overlook is that these elevated collars provide a critical buffer against mechanical damage from commercial string trimmers and mowers, which can easily strip the galvanization off the base of a structural post and initiate a localized corrosion cell that compromises the steel's integrity over time. Furthermore, if you observe the finishing technique closely, they should be troweling a slight pitch or "shed" away from the post to ensure that hydrostatic pressure doesn't force moisture into the interface between the steel and the concrete, which is a notorious failure point in high-tension applications like sail structures where the constant micro-vibrations can create tiny gaps for water to ingress.

I've seen 'em use those collars as a way to keep trash from piling up, too. If you've got exposed bolts, it’s a magnet for leaves and litter that’s a pain to clean out. When it’s capped off smooth, you just hit it with a leaf blower and you're good.

Only thing is, if they didn't prep the top of the pier before that second pour, you'll see that collar pop right off after a few winters. It's basially a decorative shell, so it's gotta be sloped right or ice'll just get in the gap and wreck it.

Update: That makes so much sense. I saw the landscaping crew earlier and realized how easily a mower coud ding those posts. One thing though—I noticed the top of the main pier looked pretty smooth before they poured the collar. If they didn't score the surface, is there a risk of the cap just cracking off or letting water sit in that seam?
