The delivery truck just dropped off the load for my new build and I’m looking at these engineered beams with a bit of a side-eye. They have those typical green-painted ends, but one of them has a noticible crown and the edges look like the glue might be failing or peeling back. I’ve always heard these are supposed to be rock solid and straight, so seeing this makes me wonder if I'm being too picky or if this is just standard for a job site. Some of the guys tell me you can just pull them straight when you’re nailing them into the header, but the delamination thing relly worries me for a structural piece. Is it worth the hassle of calling the lumber yard to swap it out, or is this just what you get these days? I don't want to be the guy who holds up the whole framing crew over somthing that might be a non-issue once it's under load, but I also don't want a floor that sags in ten years. What whould you do?

I’ve dealt with this on a few builds where the supplier let the bunks sit out in the rain too long before delivery. A slight crown is one thing—you ussually want to install those "crown up" anyway so the load flattens it out—but delamination is a hard stop for me. If those veneers are acutally peeling apart, the glue bond is compromised, and that beam isn't going to hit its rated load capacity. I had a load of LVLs show up last summer that looked similar, and the rep from the yard tried to tell me it was just "surface swelling." I didn't buy it. If you can stick a putty knife into the layers, it's garbage. These things cost way too much money to accept a defective product. Send it back and get a fresh one. The framing crew might grumble about the delay, but they aren't the ones who will be liable if that header fails or causes the drywall to crack out in two years.
I've seen guys lose thier minds over what looks like peeling on the edges of an LVL, but ussually, it's just the factory sealer failing on the ends. If it’s a Boise Cascade or similar 1-3/4 inch beam, those layers are pressed under insane pressure. Unless you can actualy stick a putty knife two inches into the core of the beam, what you’re seeing is likely just surface swelling from the humidity. I wouldn't stop a crew for that; once you get the rim board on and start nailing your joist hangers, that "peeling" usually disappears under the pressure of the hardware. As for the crown, that’s actually what you want. I’d be more worried if an 18-foot beam showed up dead flat. We always mark the crown and face it up. By the time you get the subfloor glued and screwed and the interior walls framed out above it, that beam is going to settle right where it needs to be. If you swap it for a "perfect" one, you might end up with a dip in the floor once the house is loaded. Unless the layers are literally falling off in your hand, I’d send it.
While the points regarding surface-level aesthetic degradation are valid, you must strictly evaluate wheather the observed peeling constitutes a true adhesive failure within the gluelines or merely a localized fiber separation of the outermost veneer due to uneven hygroscopic expansion. If the beam exhibits a lateral bow exceeding the permissible 1/16-inch per 10 feet of length, the internal stresses induced by forcing it into alignment can lead to long-term creep or splitting at the bearing points. I whould verify the moisture content with a pin-type meter to ensure the core hasn't reached a saturation point that would permanently compromise the structural integrity of the phenol-formaldehyde resins.
Whoa, I’m just starting my first big DIY build and reading this is making me so nervous but also super pumped to learn! If you do end up keeping it, what kind of saw are you even using to cut trough somthing that thick? I just got a new circular saw and I'm wondering if these engineered beams need a special blade beacuse of all that glue.
Also, does that green paint on the ends actualy seal it from the rain, or is it just a brand color thing? I see it on almost every job site and always wondered if I shold be painting my regular 2x4s too!
Don't let 'em talk you into keepin' junk. Yards love dumpin' the warped stuff on sites hopin' nobody'll notice. If that thing's got a twist alongside the crown, your drywallers're gonna hate you. Tryin' to shim a ceiling that’s wavy 'cause of a bad beam's a total nightmare. Just call the yard and tell 'em to swap it out. They’ll complain, but they’ve got better ones. I’d rather wait a day for a straight beam than spend a week fixin' cracks later.
Before you send the whole crew home, have you ruled out wether that 'delamination' is acutally just edge-fray from a dull factory saw blade? I’ve seen plenty of LVLs where the outer veneer looks like it's peeling, but it's realy just a ragged cut that swelled up when it hit the humidity. Also, regarding the crown—are you sure it's not just a standard mill tolerance? Most of these engineered beams have a slight curve by design. If you pull it tight with the joist hangers, does the gap actually persist, or is it just sitting loose right now?
Quick update—I took the advice about the putty knife and tried to get it into those layers. It barely went in a quarter inch, so it was just the factory sealer peeling off like you mentioned. We ended up installing it crown up, and once the load was on, it leveled out perfectly. Glad I didn't hold up the crew over nothing!
