What is the shear strength of a single Teco nail on an earthquake strap? I realize those straps required multiple nails but I am curious as to just what is the capacity of one nail.
The shear strength of a good quality nail is affected by two factors. The first is the nail diameter, the second factor that is often overlooked is the wood being used. “Common†nails (0.148†diameter) are stronger than “Box†nails (0.131â€). 0.131†x 1-1/2†long Teco nails typically have a shear strength of between 160-180 lbs each depending on the wood they are driven into. 0.148†x 1-1/2†long Teco nails typically have a shear strength of between 230-250 lbs each depending on wood. Of course the manufacturer of the nail you end up using is the final authority on the exact strength of their nails.
