I finally got the red oak staircase finished and it was defintely a learning experiance dealing with these price points. That main newel post at the bottom set the budget back a full grand just for the one piece, wich relly puts the pressure on you when you're making those final cuts. The barley twist spindles were nearly seventy bucks a pop too. When you are spacing out a landing with a parquet-style border like this, every measurement feels alot more high-stakes becasue you can't just run to the local lumber yard for a quick replacement if you mess up the grain matching. I did run into a bit of a snag with the mid-post. The homeowner specifically requested a post in that spot, but the supplier they were dead set on using didn't offer extended faces for that model. I ended up having to do a splice to make the height work out correctly. It isn't exactly how I’d prefer to do it, but that's how it goes when you're working with specific parts the client picked out. The baseboards tied in nicely along the wall transition though, and overall the red oak has a great weight to it. It's a relief to have the heavy lifting done before the finishers come in to do thier thing.

I had a similar heart-attack moment last spring when I was installing a custom walnut rail system from Coffman. That feeling of double-checking a cut five times beacuse each baluster is a week's pay is somethig I don't miss. I remember working on a curved landing where the grain had to flow perfectly into the nosing, and I spent more time staring at the wood than acutally using the miter saw just to make sure I wasn't wasting a three-hundred-dollar board.
Regarding that mid-post splice, I’ve been there when a client insists on a specific L.J. Smith profile that doesn't quite fit the rise. I ended up using a hidden dowel and a realy tight scarf joint for a similar height issue. If you use a high-quality wood glue and match the cathedral of the grain on the red oak, most people won't even spot it once the stain and poly hit. It’s a bit of a headache, but sometimes you have to make the math work when the catalog falls short. Red oak is forgiving because it takes stain so well, but that weight is no joke. Moving those massive 6-inch newels by yourself is a workout. I'm glad the baseboards lined up; that transition is usally where my patience wears thin when the drywall isn't perfectly plumb.
I've run into that exact height issue with pre-turned posts before, and I usally try to steer clear of splicing if I can help it. On a job last winter using some L.J. Smith Colonial pieces, I ended up building a custom decorative plinth for the base of the mid-post to get that extra five inches of lift. It makes the transition look a bit more intentional than a mid-shaft seam, especally when the red oak grain starts to shift after the stain hits it.
The cost of those barley twists is definately high-stakes, but I find the real stress comes during the boring process. I always use a heavy-duty self-centering jig becasue one blowout on a finished tread is a nightmare. I’ve started charging a little extra on the estimate for anything where the individual balusters cost more than my lunch, just to cover the extra hour I spend triple-checking the layout lines before the drill ever touches wood. It’s a diferent kind of exhaustion compared to framing, but seeing that solid rail assembly at the end makes the tension feel justified.
Are you sure that mid-post splice is going to hold up to the lateral pressure long-term, especally if kids are hanging on the rail? Even with a good grain match, red oak moves alot with seasonal humidity. Have you ruled out the possibility of the seam telegraphing thru the finish in a year or two? I usally worry that once the wood shrinks a bit, that joint becomes an eyesore. Did you consider boring through the center for a steel rod to keep it from snapping at the splice point?
Man, those barley twists are a total pain. I did a set last year and spent half the time just cleaning out the sanding dust from the grooves so the stain wouldn't go splotchy. For that mid-post, if you're worried about the splice showing later, I've found that a tight-fitting trim collar at the joint can hide alot of sins if the client's cool with the look. Did you end up pinning it or just rely on the glue? Red oak's sturdy, but it's a beast to move alone.
