I'm currently stuck on the installation phase for a school library project involving those massive natural timber supports. We're trying to fit these irregular trunks into a multi-tiered circular seating area, but my standard compass scribe is just not cutting it with the deep furrows in the bark. Every time I try to trace the profile onto the base plates, the point jumps or the angle changes just enought to leave a massive gap once I start cutting. Has anyone built a custom jig for this kind of high-profile log work? I'm worried that if I keep free-handing the adjustments, the gaps are going to be a total eyesore against the finished floor. I saw some folks talking about using a specialized offset scribe or even a modified router base to get a tighter fit, but I’m a bit nervous about ruining the material given how expensive these structural pieces are. When you're dealing with those deep furrows in natural timber, a standard compass is going to fail every time becuase the pivot point lacks the stability to handle the vertical offset. I've found that building a **sled-based offset scribe** is the only way to get those joints looking like they grew out of the floor. You basicly want to create a wide plywood base that spans the high points of the bark, with a vertical housing for your pencil or marker that keeps it perfectly perpendicular to the base plate at all times. This prevents the 'jump' you're experiencing when the point hits a deep groove.
Another trick if you're worried about the gaps is to actualy skip the direct scribe on the first pass. Instead of trying to hit the final line imediately, scribe a template using 1/4-inch luan or cardboard. It's much cheaper to mess up a piece of scrap than a structural timber. Once you have that template dialed in, you can transfer it to the base plate. If you want a truly seamless look, you can also back-cut the bottom of the log at a slight inward angle. This creates a sharp leading edge that crushes slightly when you set the weight, wich closes up any minor discrepancies in the scribe. Some guys will suggest cutting a dado into the tree so it overlaps the flooring, which does solve the wood movement issue and hides the joint entirely. But if you have to stick to a butt joint for the design, you might want to look into a specialized **sculpin scribe**. They have a much longer reach and a more rigid frame than a standard compass, which helps maintain your verticality when the bark depth is swinging by two or three inches. Just make sure you're referencing from a level plane, or the whole geometry will be off once you drop the log into place.
If the gaps are still haunting you, remember that wood movement is going to happen regardless. These big timbers are going to shrink and expand differently than your base plates. Keeping the scribe tight is the goal, but leaving a tiny bit of breathing room or using a color-matched flexible sealant in the deepest furrows can save you alot of headaches down the road when the school's HVAC system kicks on and starts drying everythign out.
I had this exact nightmare on a cabin build last year. What finally saved me wasn't a fancy scribe, but a cheap laser level and a block of wood. I set the laser on a flat reference point on the floor, then took a scrap block cut to the exact height of my gap. I taped a sharpie to the top of the block and just slid it around the log, keeping the laser line on a mark I made on the block. It keeps your hand steady and ensures you aren't tilting the pencil up or down when you hit those deep bark pockets. Perfect fit on the first try without overthinking the jig.
I'm still relly new to this, so I’m trying to picture how that sculpin scribe stays steady. Does it feel heavy or awkward to hold against the bark? Also, once you acutally get that perfect line drawn around those deep grooves, what do you even use to cut it? I’d be terrified of my saw slipping and ruining the whole log after all that work. woud a regular jigsaw even be long enugh for a thick timber, or do people use somthing more heavy-duty?
Quick update — I tried that block and laser trick this afternoon. It realy helped keep the reference line level across those deep furrows. I'm still a bit shaky on the actual cutting part, though. To the person asking about the saw: has anyone used a power carver for the final fit after scribing with a sled? I’m terrified of over-cutting those expensive supports.
