Lower-cost alternative to skim coats in the US?

Hiya! I'm a newbie but very glad to find this group.

I'm wondering if there's a technological solution to replace skim-coating with plaster over an essentially sound existing plaster-on-lath wall, in a loft. I wonder whether there's a spray-on plaster type of solution? I'm thinking of the way they do spray-on intumescent (sp?) paint, for fire ratings, but in this case, I'm only after the cosmetic look. So I don't need the intumescent paint - which tends to be MORE expensive than skim-coating. I thought I saw an article about this type of technique in Britian a long time ago, but I'm darned if I can't find it.

Thanks!

Talk to any drywall company that sprays textured ceilings. You could use many different products with many results.
