I ran a load of dishes right before I headed out for a long weekend. Since I was in a rush, I just cracked the door open so they coud air dry while I was away. I checked them before I left and everythign looked normal, just slightly damp. I figured they'd be bone dry by the time I got back today. Instead, I opened the door to find all my forks, spoons, and even my kitchen shears covered in this nasty brownish-gold rust. I'm seriously so confused. I've washed these exact pieces in this dishwasher dozens of times and never had an issue. They're only about three months old and ussually come out looking brand new. The plates and glasses right next to them are perfectly fine, but the metal stuff is just trashed now. Does leaving the door open for a few days cause some kind of reaction with the detergent residue? I relly don't want to ruin my next set. If anyone knows what went wrong or if I can even save these, please let me know. I tried scrubbing one fork and it's not really coming off easily.

This usually happens because of a combination of **chlorides** in your detergent and the high-humidity environment created when you crack the door but don't actually empty the rack. Even though the dishes felt slightly damp when you left, that moisture gets trapped in the narrow gaps between the cutlery. By leaving it for a few days, you basically created a little greenhouse for oxidation. Most modern silverware sets are 18/0 stainless steel, meaning they have 18% chromium but 0% nickel. Nickel is what realy provides that deep corrosion resistance. If your kitchen shears are a diferent grade of metal—which they usually are—you might have even had a bit of **galvanic corrosion** going on, where one metal accelerates the rusting of another because they're touching in a damp environment. The shears likely acted as the catalyst here. The reason it didn't happen before is simply the time factor. Leaving wet steel for two hours while it finishes drying is one thing; leaving it for three days is another. Those tiny droplets of water and concentrated detergent residue have way more time to break down the protective chromium oxide layer on the steel. Once that layer is breached, the iron in the steel starts to rust immediately. You can probably save these, though. Don't bother with regular dish soap; it won't touch that brownish-gold staining. Get some **Bar Keepers Friend** (the powder version works best). It contains oxalic acid, which is specifically designed to dissolve rust without scratching the finish like steel wool would. Just make a paste, let it sit for a minute, and then scrub with a non-scratch sponge. For the future, if you're heading out for more than a few hours, either finish the job and dry them by hand or just leave the door closed. Cracking it open just lets enought oxygen in to feed the rust process while keeping the humidity high enough to prevent everythign from actually drying out quickly.
Wait, I had no idea about the 18/0 vs 18/10 thing. I just checked my forks and they don't even have a stamp, so they're prolly the lower grade. I've been cracking the door open every night to save on electricity, but now I'm wondering if I'm just setting myself up for a disaster. Does the specific type of detergent make it worse? I ussually use those all-in-one pods, but maybe switching to a liquid or powder would be safer for the metal. Also, would a rinse aid protect them, or does that just help with the water spots?
To the person asking about pods—yeah, they can definately be harsher. Many have high bleach content that's brutal on 18/0 steel if it sits. Another thing to check is "nesting" in your cutlery basket. If spoons are cupped together, they trap pockets of water that won't evaporate even with the door open. I always mix my forks, spoons, and knives so no flat surfaces touch. Also, make sure your rinse aid dispenser isn't empty. Rinse aid helps water sheet off the metal quickly. If it's empty and you're using pods, those little droplets just sit there and eat away at the finish for three days straight.
