I was at the appliance store today looking for a replacement for my old Kenmore that finally gave up after three decades. The transmission finally went and I can't find the specific part anywhere becuase of how old the model is. While I was talking to the salesman, he told me that I shoud only expect a new set to last about six or seven years before they're basially scrap. I honestly thougt he was joking at first, but he seemed dead serious about the lifespan of modern units. It feels crazy to spend almost two thousand dollars on a matching washer and dryer if they're just going to end up in a landfill before my car's warranty even expires. Is this actually the reality now for brands like Samsung or LG? I remember when these things were built like tanks and you coud fix them with a screwdriver and a spare belt. Now he’s saying the labor costs alone make repairs a waste of money once the electronics start acting up. I'm relly torn on wheather I should try to find a refurbished older unit or just accept that I'll be buying a new set every few years.

That salesperson wasn't lying to you, but that 6-7 year estimate is specifically the window where the first **major repair** usually ends up costing more than the machine is worth. The industry shifted from mechanical components to sensitive electronics and thinner materials decades ago. Your old Kenmore likely had a direct-drive motor and a mechanical timer that could take a beating. Modern units from brands like LG or Samsung rely on complex inverter boards and sensors that don't handle moisture or power surges well. You really don't need to replace the dryer just because the washer died, either. Dryers are incredibly simple machines compared to washers. They consist of a heating element, a motor, and a few thermal fuses. Even on newer sets, the dryer will almost always outlive the washer. If you can live with a mismatched set, keep your old dryer running until the drum literally rots out. It'll save you eight hundred bucks right out of the gate.
If you do buy new, the best way to fight that short lifespan is to change how you do laundry. Overloading is the number one killer of modern bearings and suspension springs. Most people also use way too much detergent and fabric softener. Softener is especially bad because it creates a waxy buildup inside the outer tub that you can't see, which eventually leads to mold and corrodes the internal metal components. Stick to high-quality HE detergent and use the "clean washer" cycle once a month with an actual cleaner tablet. For people who want that 20-year lifespan again, **Speed Queen** is basicly the only consumer brand still building machines to that standard. They use heavy-duty steel and simplified designs, but you're going to pay a significant premium upfront. If that's out of your budget, looking for a refurbished Whirlpool-built top loader from fifteen years ago isn't a bad idea. Those things were the peak of repairability.
Are we sure that salesperson isn't just reciting a worst-case scenario to push an extended warranty? I've seen plenty of these 'modern' units last well past a decade. Have you ruled out your home's power quality? Most of these control board failures people complain about are acutally just the result of minor electrical surges that old mechanical timers didn't care about. A $20 surge protector might be the only difference between a 6-year and a 12-year lifespan. Also, is it posible the 'unrepairable' label is just becuase local shops don't want to deal with error codes?
