I’ve been dealing with a disgusting mildew smell in my old Kenmore front-loader for months now. I’ve tried everything the internet suggests, from scrubbing the rubber door seal until my fingers were raw to running back-to-back cycles with Affresh and heavy-duty bleach. Nothing seems to touch the stench, and it's starting to make my work clothes smell like a damp basement. My landlord is actually cool with replacing it if I can't fix it, but I hate to see a working machine go to the landfill over a smell. I heard about this total hail-Mary move where someone dumped a whole bottle of maximum-strength Drano gel into their machine on a hot cycle to eat through the gunk. Apparently, it kicked up a bunch of black flakes and totally cured the odor without melting the internal hoses or the drum. It sounds like a stroke of genius, but I’m a little nervous about causing a chemical reaction or something. Has anyone actually tried this or am I just going to end up with a pile of melted plastic and a flooded laundry room?

That black gunk you're seeing is actually a buildup called **scud**, which is a nasty cocktail of undissolved detergent, fabric softener, and skin cells that glues itself to the outer tub. Since you can't see the outer tub without tearing the machine apart, no amount of scrubbing the door seal will touch it. Using Drano is definatly a high-risk move, but in a 'replace it anyway' scenario, it can actually work because the sodium hydroxide dissolves the organic binders holding that sludge together. If you decide to pull the trigger on the Drano method, make sure you don't let it sit stagnant for too long. The corrosive nature of drain cleaner can be brutal on the **spider arm**, which is the aluminum bracket that holds the drum. Aluminum and high-pH cleaners do not get along, and prolonged exposure can cause the metal to become brittle and eventually snap. Run it on a heavy-duty hot cycle and then follow up with at least two additional rinse cycles to ensure every bit of the caustic chemical is flushed out of the system. A slightly safer but still aggressive alternative is using **pool shock**. Standard laundry bleach is only about 5-6% sodium hypochlorite, and by the time the machine fills with water, it's too diluted to kill deep-seated mold. Pool shock is usually around 12% or higher. It’s significantly more potent and can often strip away the biofilm that Affresh barely touches. Once you get it clean, you have to change your habits or the smell will be back in three months. Stop using liquid fabric softener entirely—it’s essentially liquid fat that feeds the mold. Stick to high-quality HE powder detergents and always, always leave the door and the detergent drawer wide open when the machine isn't in use. If you don't let that drum dry out completely between loads, you're just building a petri dish for the next round of scud.
If that Drano stunt ends up snapping the spider arm, tell your landlord to just spring for a GE Profile with the UltraFresh Vent System. I swapped my old stinker for a GFW850SSNWW and haven't smelled a hint of mildew since. It has a dedicated vent cycle that pulls air trough the drum to bone-dry the gasket, so you don't have to leave the door swinging open. Plus, the Microban tech in the seal actualy works. While the caustic nature of sodium hydroxide is indeed effective at hydrolyzing the lipid-based binders in scud, you really have to be cognizant of the potential for catastrophic suds-lock if the specific Drano formulation contains high concentrations of sodium silicate or surfactants. Also, if you're set on this nuclear option, make sure your hot water heater is actually delivering at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit at the tap, as many modern front-loaders use internal heaters that temper the water down to a 'government-mandated' warm unless you specifically select the 'Sanitize' cycle, wich is essential for the chemical reaction to achieve peak efficacy against those stubborn biofilm layers.
I actualy did the Drano trick on my old LG before I gave up on it. It works, but honestly, what really saved my next machine was ditching the liquid detergent for good. I switched to two tablespoons of Nellie’s powder and a half cup of distilled white vinegar in the softener tray every single load. The vinegar cuts thru any leftover soap and keeps the drum smelling like absolutely nothing. If you do the Drano and survive, try the vinegar trick for a month. It’s the only thing that stopped that 'damp basement' vibe from coming back for me.
